It's like they know that - despite winning a lot of individual battles - they can't ever win the culture war. Beating up on minorities will forever mark them out as life's losers - however rich they get - and knowing that only makes them angrier and more bitter.

biodiversity tends to prevent catastrophic collapse of things like food webs because no singular species is holding it all together. the internet doesn't always operate on a similar principle, as the amazon server outage demonstrates. of course, i don't know if the comparison is valid.
