Gotta give big props to the Downtown D.C. Holiday Market. In the last few years it has gotten *way* better, and proves that people will absolutely come out for well-planned car-free spaces and events. More of this, D.C.!

Interesting: New data from @brookings.edu shows that spending in D.C. dropped significantly when President Trump deployed the National Guard in mid-August. Similarly, hotel revenue has been on a steady decline since mid-summer. www.brookings.edu/articles/con...

Rather than simply boycotting e-commerce giants, Free DC is organizing a "procott" in time for holiday shopping.

Their local shopping guide features 50+ spots on board to support D.C.'s autonomy, including @solidstatebooksdc.bsky.social, @metrobardc.bsky.social, @loyaltybooks.bsky.social, and more:
This holiday season, Free DC wants you to "procott" these local businesses
While boycotts operate on withholding money, procotts are about spending it.

Sarah Beckstrom's ex-boyfriend told NBC News she dreamed of becoming an FBI special agent.

She didn't want to deploy to D.C.

"She hated it. She cried about it."

But she started visiting monuments and museums and started enjoying it.

May she rest in peace.

Right: What the New York Times covered in 2023. Homicide and terrorism cover about 60% of all news.

I don't ask for the two bars to totally be the same, but more reality in reporting would be beneficial.

I just spoke with Capital Area Food Bank CEO Radha Muthiah about how they are preparing for a possible lapse in SNAP funding. She told me that for every meal they provide, SNAP provides *nine*.

"The magnitude of the SNAP program is significant," she says.
Today @mayorbowser.dc.gov says no final decision has been made yet on whether D.C. will cover the cost of SNAP benefits should federal funding lapse this weekend as expected. She's waiting for the outcome of a court hearing on a lawsuit filed by 25 states (including D.C.) on it.
