I'm Co-Chair of Halifax Cycling Coalition, working hard to make cycling in Halifax safer, more convenient and more joyful. In this role, I focus first and foremost on the 60% of the population who would cycle more if it felt safe.
Wagners Law brought their ever-popular arm/leg bands with flashing light and handed them out to the 110 riders at I Light HFX 2025. Halifax Cycling Coalition had their tent with hot chocolate and other refreshments as well as prizes donated by Halifax Cycles, Giant Halifax and Long Alley Bicycles.

About 110 people on their bikes had a great time at I Light HFX 2025, jointly organized with Dal/Kings Bike Centre. Big thanks to our sponsors, Wagners Law, Halifax Cycles, Giant Halifax and Long Alley Bicycles. Also thanks to the ride marshals, Halifax Bike Party, and all the organizers.

Don’t miss I Light HFX. The weather is looking warm (by recent standards) but a little damp. But we won’t let that dampen our spirits, we’re Haligonians!

6pm tomorrow (Saturday, Nov 8) at the Dal Quad by the Dal/Kings Bike Centre.

How's this for def'n of a bicycle in new TSA regulations? This is my language. Trying to be inclusive while ruling out more dangerous vehicles. Also borrowing from de facto stds. and other provs. The term "conveyance" is already used in the TSA to cover anything that is not a motor vehicle. #bikehfx

My letter to councillors on behalf of Halifax Cycling Coalition. I’ll leave it to @sflkirk.bsky.social to post her email which I reference.

Look who turned up at the HRM Community Ride (formerly the Annual Mayor’s Ride)? Riding on the back of the Bike Mayor’s bike. Unfortunately, as soon as he hit a few bumps in the road at the pump track, he lost his head.

Wonderful to have obstruction gone on the McDonald bridge bike lane! They were still cleaning when I went to Dartmouth and it was all cleaned up by the time I rode back to Halifax. #bikehfx

It was a beautiful day for the crowds at Agricola Open Street. HCC kept safe about 50 bikes, provided free bike maintenance by Francis from Halifax Cycles and free bike fits by physio Adrian Wong. We also distributed postcards and stickers for Cycling Guide and our new crash card. #bikehfx

The HCC crew had a great ride this morning out to Bike and Bean and back. It was a beautiful day although it started out quite cool (8 degrees when we left at 8 am). Bike and Bean and the trail were incredibly busy — at times it felt like a traffic jam.

Cycling Guide finds three routes. The more indirect the routes, the stronger the indication of lack of infrastructure.

HCC meeting with HRM city staff to scout out locations for the Bike Valet for Nocturne. We’re hoping to have three (!) locations this year. Stay tuned for details.

And, by way of example, here’s the route in the Cycling Guide app.

I see Andy Fillmore is holding a town hall on Thursday with Councillors John Young and Billy Gillis (both have consistently voted against cycling infrastructure).

Perhaps some folks from #bikehfx would like to drop in and tell them what we think?

I checked it out in Cycling Guide which uses OpenStreetMap and there’s just a sidewalk there. The good news is that if you find a glitch in OSM we can get it fixed in a day or two.

Lovely ride today on the South Shore with lunch at La Have Bakery. #bikehfx

4/.. Of course, this data dates back to 2017 but the number of people cycling has increased dramatically since then. Source: @stats.hfx.bike from city counters #bikehfx

3/.. And this graph shows support for cycling infrastructure in three cities, Victoria, Kelowna and Halifax. In Halifax 86% of those surveyed (cyclists and non-cyclists) said it was a very good idea or a somewhat good idea.

2/.. Some key illustrations from that scientific survey, this first one showing cycling participation in three cities, Victoria, Kelowna and Halifax, with 32% of the population in Halifax cycling 1 or more times per week. #bikehfx
