Question: Is there a good book out there chronicling the history of public (particularly publicly funded) libraries?

Talk to your city council. Also do it yourself. Pick up the cigarette butts and replace them with wildflowers. The birds and the bees thank you.

This would help our bees "

Appropriate for this moment. Appropriate to repair.

Well this seems like an appropriate post to piggyback my return to social media on.

The state of the world has me so concerned that i went to rehab and got sober. How exactly is one supposed to find and buy drugs after a societal collapse, after all?
The stupidity in Trump’s new tariffs is apparently limitless.

He has introduced a 10% tariff on the British Indian Ocean Territory.

The only inhabited island there is Diego Garcia, home to US service personnel.

TRUMP HAS PUT A TARIFF ON A US MILITARY BASE

If you ever wondered what it’s like to be on the spectrum, this is basically it:

“But I now get why you are confused and it’s literally because my dumb ass took six words too literally an hour ago. So try to forget everything said after that point until now.”

In perhaps the world’s least surprising turn of events, my fling with the orphaned Romanian gypsy appears to be ending in a spectacular nova of drama and strife.

The past two months have been the most life affirming of the last 15 years.

I’d do it again in a second.

Until very recently I had not spent any time around someone with a serious gambling problem. Holy shit. I think that, objectively, heroin would be less likely to destroy your life. (Still bad, obviously.)

Politicians squabble about weed while states are legalizing this?

Make it make sense.

Not sure about the band name, but I can already hear the awful country-pop top 40 twang playing along while Elon fakes a drawl and laments the loss of work ethic, patriotism, and deference to the ruling elite class in modern society.
Name this band.

Does anyone else feel like our government is just sleeping on developing useful policy to manage future waves of climate migrants? Over the next 20 years it’s going to be one of the primary geopolitical & socioeconomic challenges and we are just…. Not talking about it at all.

One of the things about psychoanalytic discourse that really bugs me is the stylistic choice to use dense, esoteric language and inaccessible jargon without a technical imperative to do so. This is something one does when they desire to be perceived as profound but have nothing interesting to say.

????
This is supposed to be a clinically useful insight from the Lacanian school of psychoanalysis.

I believe It is primarily used to convince people that they’ve had a stroke.

As much as I rag on psychoanalysis in general, Lacanism is a whole other level of nonsense.

It’s all like that.

This is not a vocation serious people choose. It’s a career best suited to young people who are getting bored waiting for access to their trust.

The ideal patient is the same, except they are getting anxious instead of bored.

It’s a neat little ecosystem of bullshit.
I’m sure you’re thinking “it can’t be that bad.”

It is.

“'Desire of the analyst' refers to the analyst functioning from lack as castration, rather than from lack as frustration (where she would be living in a state of rivalry), desire and lack being the same thing.”

FYI, those aren’t typos.

Man I am really on one re: psychoanalysis. The more I read, the less I understand how anyone could take it seriously.

Psychoanalytic writing is so bad that I wouldn’t have believed it if I wasn’t seeing it.

I’m literally rage reading about Lacanian Psychoanalysis. It’s so bad that I can’t stop.
September 18, 2023 at 7:38 AM
Just your weekly reminder that psychoanalysis is completely made up nonsense and probably should not still be practiced.

Analyst are the chiropractors of mental health: $300/wk for 4 years and at the end if you feel better it’s because time, not talking about dreams, healed you.

And it’s not just me who has an intense reaction the style. One of the YouTube options for this song is looped… for 90 minutes.

Like the uploader heard it and thought listening 45 times in a row would be about right for the median listener.

In folk/americana/gospel music there is this fantastic style of harmonized acapella that really only works for female performers. It’s extremely distinctive and involves what is almost, but not quite, yodeling.

This style gives me goosebumps every time. Every single time.

What moved Gonzalez enough to reimagine it? He changes the tone from angry to resigned and contemplative. It works both way.

And you
Kept us awake with wolves teeth
