Oof this is actually deep. They've predetermined (reasonably) that AI will supercharge productivity, but what if the way it will do so is by streamlining trade?

More broadly, it *won't* do that if idiots are in charge and don't allow the private sector to take advantage of its new benefits.

True, but I'm still waiting to see who is willing to use export tariffs at scale.

The funniest thing is that it would technically be complying with demands to reduce the trade deficit.

But this is all merging with the carbon tax discussion. Adam Tooze talks about this in his newsletter today. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-...
Chartbook 369 Is it madness or is it "Brexit-by-CBAM"? Locating Trumpian economics in policy space.
In these head-scratching days it is useful to try to locate the madness of Trumpian economic policy in more familiar policy space.

That would be the US. Every East Asian country loaded up on US treasuries following the 1998 crisis, determined never to get caught so far out on a limb again. If they need to pull out en masse...

Unfortunately, markets crashing is now part of the narrative. So now we have to explain why this is not a normal result of successful economic policies.

If countries want to retaliate, export tariffs are a much better way. The entire premise is that the US is too dependent on their supplies.

True realists recognize that Russia is in China's sphere of influence. Much better to fight a proxy war with Russia than to have a war directly with China.

It's the sort of message those who think Trump will be good for "business" need to hear.
February 25, 2025 at 9:54 AM
What specifically are you talking about then
January 17, 2025 at 5:44 AM
So 15 posts into an argument about the election, we find out that the election doesn't even matter. Maybe you could post this in the original thread too.
January 17, 2025 at 5:13 AM
The point I want to make is that running the economy cold for a decade thereafter was stupid and counterproductive, but that has little to do with any specific questions of accountability.
January 16, 2025 at 2:41 AM
The part nobody ever wants to talk about though is consequences for the large mass of homeowners who lied to obtain financing.

Depends on if you want to expand this discussion beyond just people who already accept the frame of class warfare.

My first response is "so tell me your plan to raise revenues." Basic lifeblood of any company.

If liberals are going to go soft now then what was the whole point of the 1st Trump impeachment?
December 2, 2024 at 5:06 AM
It doesn't look bad! Political figures should not be expected to throw their families under the bus. Otherwise what sort of person will run for office?

bsky.app/profile/radl...
Yeah. The idea that this will somehow enable Trump to do something he otherwise wouldn’t have is silly.

It looks bad. It’s also understandable. It’s only unforgivable if he doesn’t pair it with a historically huge act of clemency for a ton of people who aren’t his son.
Among others, Trump pardoned Joe Arpaio, Dinesh D’Souza, Bernard Kerik, George Papadopoulos, Charles Kushner, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort and Steve Bannon

but sure let’s run around with our hair on fire bc joe biden has set a bad precedent and undermined our precious norms

Ok but now I'm really curious

Was Bluesky founded by someone whose last name is Lantian 藍天 (Blue Sky)?

Hmm, I'm not sure I follow your argument then. Sounds like it's precisely a capital vs. labor issue.

I think that means the economy is going great, as long as your customers are overseas
