Enemy #4 design exploration
- My first sketch of a mouse was so strong, it was hard for me to even think of other options.
- Did an obligatory numeral with eyes

Designed a little puzzle room today: 1) Started with paper sketch
2) Created background art in Tiled
3) Add collisions, actors, etc in #gbstudio
4) Lots of playtesting and tweaking

The technical solution I implmented to fix the move animation took away the smooth continuous movement.

But it actually gives Juan way more personality if he's just scootching closer to the player two steps at a time. Win-win!

The limitations of developing for Gameboy hardware continue to lead to better design choices. For instance, I originally had Juan move at a consistent speed toward that player. But something about the code was making the move animation jittery. #gbdev #gbstudio

I developed two very different strong finalists. A witch who can't stop doomscrolling and a crab. The crab is going to be way more performant and flexible thanks to symmetry, but I'll keep the witch in my back pocket. #gbstudio #pixelart

Basic movement logic for Juan. If Pugzy is in his sight line he will move in her direction until the edge of a platform. He's a solid actor so he pushes Pugzy and blocks her from jumping back up. #gbstudio

Turning the eggshell into a duck/swan body helped it register more as a conceivable creature. But the giant beak was just not quite working. Switching the head to a duck helped, but in order to keep the 2 shape I had a weird halo of feathers.

For enemy number 2, I first experimented with a variety of concepts for animals that could match the silhouette. Snake in a sock was a strong contender, but the weird parrot head ended up being the more fruitful direction. #pixelart #screenshotsaturday #gbstudio

As @laurakbuzz.bsky.social has written, you can learn a lot about a game from its butts. In #kerokerocowboy by @metagamemike.bsky.social, you can "eat" enemies but can't swallow them. Accordingly, when viewed from behind, the only cheeks in sight are facial.

It's diegetic indigestion.
