If you’re looking for immersive folk horror, let David Barnett take you to seaside town Scuttler’s Cove, where London money and ye olde local gods are about to collide. Having visited Cornwall for the first time last year, I can tell you that this quick, fun read felt like going back there.

"James! We were told you were dead!"

"You know how it is, Moneypenny. Can't keep a good man down" *slaps knob on desk*

"Ah, 007. Please come into my office. You're late."

"So they keep telling me, M." *winks at camera*

Read @davidmbarnett.bsky.social ‘s Scuttler’s Cove and another strong recommend for folk horror - same universe as the excellent Withered Hill but stand-alone.

A school careers meeting, circa 1880, London.

"Now, young chap, what career would you like to pursue when you're older?"

"I think I would very much like to be an accountant, sir."

"Don't be ridiculous, boy! With a name like Algernon Blackwood? You'll write scary stories and be happy with it!"

The best thing about writing folk horror is that the locations where it invariably takes place always have crap mobile phone and data coverage, for some reason.

As a writer I need to monetise this cancer. If the bastard’s going to squat in my gullet for the next few months it can fucking well earn its keep.

I see absolute nothing sinister in these robots marching on to stage and Elon Musk pocketing a trillion dollars to provide a million more of them. And everyone cheering like maniacs.

If ever there was a time for a Netflix adaptation of The Invisibles, this is it. The conspiracy crowd would leap on it joyfully and then have their minds blown.

British prison service right now:

Nisus Wettus: Crucifixion?
Mr. Cheeky: Er, no, freedom actually.
Nisus Wettus: What?
Mr. Cheeky: Yeah, they said I hadn't done anything and I could go and live on an island somewhere.
Nisus Wettus: Oh I say, that's very nice. Well, off you go then.

I am almost at the end of this book. It’s a good horror story. I like the style of writing and the pace of the story. I also think a good call of Cthulhu adventure can come out of it 🙂 #horror #ttrpg (also I cannot wait to read the other books by @davidmbarnett.bsky.social)
