Just wrote an email telling my new chair that he should be aware that because of what I research and post, I sometimes get death threats that may affect what I am able to teach in a given semester.

That's the chilling effect on free-speech that we're always talking about

Now back to the writing 🫠

This, uh, is not my bird

She (?) has however claimed a stake in my apartment

Found her on my window screen. When I went out onto the fire escape to check on her, she jumped on my shoulder and then right in through the open window

I guess she knows a chill place when she sees one

My first experience experience with Apple Silicon was lackluster when it was new. Now I'm slackjawed that my new job's MBP can run 200B parameter LLMs without even sweating (decent battery drain, tho)

Literally just drove from Pasadena to Anaheim and you’d have no clue that any of this is happening. And I was in that tiny square for 3 hours today before the LAPD lost its mind and started trapping people in for standing on sidewalks. LA is absolutely not burning. Tell your Midwestern family.
All the people I still know in LA laugh and laugh when they hear that "Los Angeles is burning." I made a couple of maps to show just how tiny and localized the protests are. GOPers are working really hard to make an excuse for declaring martial law. People should be very wary of that.

Every day should be like this for all of them. ALL OF THEM. ALL THE TIME. EVERYWHERE THEY GO. They shouldn't be able to go out to eat, to relax, to vacation, to shop, without someone making a noise.
Fox News reported that JD Vance had to move to an “undisclosed location” due to protests at the Vermont resort where he’s skiing this weekend. For inflicting misery on the world and here at home in America, this is exactly the energy that should greet Vance wherever he goes for the rest of his days.

According to Wikipedia and a conversation on NYE, Wacom is pronounced /ˈwɑːkəm/ (like "wok 'em") and not /ˈwɑːkɑm/ ("wah comm") and I wasn't ready for that

I’m hiring a postdoc! Come work with me on a project that will involve spending time both on the New Hampshire Seacoast (we’ve got beaches!) and the Bay Area in California (they’ve got beaches!) — deadline to apply is December 2.

Has anyone tried KANs yet? I'm always about the promise of fewer, more interpretable parameters, but the last (few) time(s) an arXiv model came my way hyped, it was a bust: arxiv.org/abs/2404.19756
KAN: Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks
Inspired by the Kolmogorov-Arnold representation theorem, we propose Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs) as promising alternatives to Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs). While MLPs have fixed activation...
