However, in a note De Yong wrote to Stevens, De Yong wonders if the black outfit will accentuate Ladd's diminutive stature. Stevens seemed to think so, & the buckskin tunic was used, which makes it difficult to fully register Ladd's proportions...

Back to the buckskins. Shane is often maligned for Alan Ladd's costume. In the book, Shane is described as looking more like Jack Palance's character Wilson: a professional gunman dressed for town & clad mostly in black. An early costume sketch shows Shane's outfit along these lines...
