It's actually fine. Sony Betacam SP decks use the same concept when fast searching, or for long-duration pause, of reducing the tension but keeping it *just* floating over the heads. Virtually no wear.

I think mine is a little newer than yours. Only single deck, but it does have Dolby S and it still works great, although I have had to replace the belts and a couple of capacitors.

Without even that, the technology of our entire lives has a single point of failure - your internet connection. When that fails, even in the mildest of emergencies, you are completely cut off, with no way to receive information of any kind. This will not end well.
