My first post. If you like anything involving the below - Schubert, Radu Lupu, rare and wonderful recordings, music servers, or serious-looking bearded Romanians - follow me. And if none of the above check your lists, follow me anyway because there’s more.
This is incredibly great news. There’s no better stewardship for this landmark theater. No needless wheel-reinventing by the Village Directors. What a great addition to the AC’s stable of theaters and what a gift for Westwood/UCLA cinephiles.

Hey @nba and @pablo.show .

If the NBA wants to eliminate tanking I can only think of one way: 30 balls in the lottery machine. It’s not as radical as it sounds. The current system really hasn’t created as much parity as it should.

I would watch CSI Tennessee all day.
Those trash pandas are notorious thieves.

My one line review of “Honey Don’t”: now I know what the other Cohen brother does.

I had a religious experience on Thursday night. I saw “The Gold Rush” at the Egyptian in a sold out house 100 years to the day from its premiere exactly where it premiered. I was sitting under the same gilded ceiling that Chaplin and the rest of Hollywood sat under watching it for the first time.

RIP Alfred Brendel

Listening to his 1968 Vanguard recording of Schubert D.958 in remembrance.

On June 26th, Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush” is playing at the Egyptian Theatre, exactly 100 years after it premiered there. I’m going.

A nice Preston Sturges Sunday.

Zak Starkey should find younger facsimiles of Townshend, Daltrey, and Entwistle and tour them as The What. He’d probably make more money than what they’ve been paying him and the singer might actually hit the high notes.

It’s almost as if the Dallas Maverick franchise felt an imperative to revert to its pre-Mark Cuban state as soon as he sold his ownership stake. The NBA hasn’t seen such a self-inflicted implosion since the Sixers traded Wilt. A few years later they were 9-73.

Back for the last nitrate film of the festival - “The Unholy Three (1930)”. Lon Chaney Sr.’s only talkie, a remake of his 1925 silent version. And there are no shots of him walking with the Queen, despite what Warren Zevon sang. Unbelievable that this print exists and is still projectable.

“Rope” in nitrate at the Egyptian. Life is good.

Re: James Bond, and perhaps the United States too. The Second Law of Thermodynamics remains undefeated. In plain English, everything eventually turns to sh*t.

Catching the LSO in Santa Barbara. As the Penguin Guide once stated, “nobody plays Mahler’s First Symphony like the London Symphony Orchestra.” I suppose that’s true by definition, but I’m about to find out.

Very excited. Bought tickets to 4 of the 5 shows. Had to take a pass on “Portrait of Jennie” as it’s on Valentine’s Day.

Just saw “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” again at the Egyptian. Is it the most romantic or most anti-romantic movie ever made? The images and music could not be more exquisite.

We’re putting tariffs on our two major trade partners - Mexico and Canada. Mexico has just announced the obligatory retaliatory tariffs. Others will follow.

My keen insight watching Saquon Barkley rush for 255 yards:
It is much easier to run when the people trying to stop you are well-blocked, especially when you are extremely talented, fast, and hard to tackle. RIP John Mara’s sanity.

Comcast is putting MSNBC in a rowboat with a weeks worth of food along with its other cable properties because:
- it wants to avoid political blowback during the next administration;
- it seeks to limit the effects of cable implosion on earnings;
- the optics are better than a shutdown.

@scotttobias.bsky.social Limited series have given me more respect for story editors and editors in general than I’ve ever had. Less is a lot more.

I can no longer invest a single second of my attention in the #Sixers as long as Joel Embiid is the cornerstone of the franchise. I’m not doing this to prove a point - I honestly can’t be bothered. If he doesn’t care enough about winning to actually try and stay in shape, then why should I?

Waiting for Republican members of Congress and conservative SC justices to realize that a dictator President has no use for any of them.
