My first computer experience was writing a BASIC program on some timeshare mainframe using a Teletype 33. Once finished the program could be printed out onto paper tape for easy reloading.

I had a religious experience on Thursday night. I saw “The Gold Rush” at the Egyptian in a sold out house 100 years to the day from its premiere exactly where it premiered. I was sitting under the same gilded ceiling that Chaplin and the rest of Hollywood sat under watching it for the first time.

One of his last and one of his best. Also one of the great Bruckner 5ths.

Back for the last nitrate film of the festival - “The Unholy Three (1930)”. Lon Chaney Sr.’s only talkie, a remake of his 1925 silent version. And there are no shots of him walking with the Queen, despite what Warren Zevon sang. Unbelievable that this print exists and is still projectable.

“Rope” in nitrate at the Egyptian. Life is good.

Catching the LSO in Santa Barbara. As the Penguin Guide once stated, “nobody plays Mahler’s First Symphony like the London Symphony Orchestra.” I suppose that’s true by definition, but I’m about to find out.

I’m going to cheat and select 4 to show a newbie who this Arrau guy is and what’s so special about him.
- Beethoven PC4 w/Klemperer
- Beethoven Sonata No.32 (live)
- Verdi-Liszt Aida Paraphrase
- Debussy Preludes Book I

Yes. There’s a box of Christmas Matinee Mahler concerts from the 1980’s of 1-5, 7, and 9. It went OOP and became highly collectable but then was reissued.

The two best interpreters of his piano music. Horowitz played for him as a young man. Sofronitzky was his son-in-law, though he never met him.

Just saw “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” again at the Egyptian. Is it the most romantic or most anti-romantic movie ever made? The images and music could not be more exquisite.

Three of the earliest recordings by Hungarian conductors in glorious mono, and the other by the conductor who prepared the BSO for the premiere when their conductor and nominal commissioner couldn’t make heads or tails of it (though he conducted the premiere anyway). Fricsay is unsurpassed.

There are so many great recordings of this coupling. Why settle? If I had to pick one it would be this one in extraordinary 1957 mono. Arrau re-recorded these just years later in stereo, but this recording is special.

My first post. If you like anything involving the below - Schubert, Radu Lupu, rare and wonderful recordings, music servers, or serious-looking bearded Romanians - follow me. And if none of the above check your lists, follow me anyway because there’s more.
