This week is Road Safety Week & a chance to talk about Barbara Castle!

Barbara was Transport Minister for three years yet she was able to introduce the Breathalyzer, a proper integrated transport strategy & more!

This was done despite fierce opposition.

In proper parliamentary style I have to declare an interest in this, as I’m a private renter and before moving to Sittingbourne I was a council housing tenant

Improving renters rights has been one of the biggest things for me so far in parliament, as is providing £39bn for building social housing
On 1 May 2026, we will abolish Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions when we switch on the new private rented sector tenancy system.

More details in our roadmap for implementing the Renters’ Rights Act published today 👇🏻

it's failed Medway as per every bloody where...
The 1985 Transport Act was one of the biggest policy failures of recent decades. Nothing better describes this than the chart below by @jburnmurdoch.ft.com.

A combination of new powers and funding through 'bus franchising' is looking to reverse this.

💧 It’s time to fix our broken water system. For 30 years, companies like Southern Water have prioritised profit over people. Now, Ofwat is being scrapped. A new, stronger regulator will hold polluters to account - protecting our environment, our bills, and our local rivers like the Medway.

*feels seen*
The Incrementalist Left share many of the same inclinations as Progressive Activists but they tend to favour gradual, in system change and are more politically disengaged. They can have a tendency to “opt out” of issues or debates that feel fraught. t.co/VOVTHAvQFu

One other 7/7 thread today. Because I think how the bus network got running again is a real testament to some serious heroes that day:

The bus drivers and staff who got that network running again and got London home that night.

And TfL/the Mayor disobeyed the Security Services to make it happen /1

🚨 NEW: Labour is lifting 100,000 children out of poverty by expanding access to free school meals.

Alongside free breakfast clubs, cheaper uniform costs and government-funded childcare, Labour is putting money in parents’ pockets and giving children the best start in life.

Don’t let a man who is hardly at his own desk make you an absent parent or carer.

Flexible working means more people can balance caring and career commitments - research consistently shows it makes a workforce happier, healthier and crucially there’s no loss of productivity.
