The satellite derived wind field really puts the scale into prospective. Around half the Jamaica will see hurricane force winds from Melissa, but several parishes (Westmoreland, Saint Elizabeth, Manchester, Saint James, Trelawny) will see extreme winds over 95kts/110 mph. Higher in the mountains.
October 28, 2025 at 2:24 PM
Preparation should be completed today as worsening impacts begin Sunday and Monday into early next week.

With the GFS coming more in-line with the rest of the model guidence this afternoon, it confirms that Tropical Storm Melissa will produce near-historic amounts of rainfall and flooding for Jamaica, Hispanola, and eastern Cuba when it makes landfall as a major hurricane.

Neat Mercury / Venus action going on this morning.

You can see the wind field relative to Puerto Rico. Even though the bulk of the storm will pass to the north, the island may still see tropical storm force gusts and heavy rain from the outer bands.

Erin with a well defined eye just northeast of Puerto Rico as a major hurricane.

The elevated precipitable water over Florida this week will certainly increase the flash flood threat. Though tropical development may still be lacking until after the disturbance crosses over the state, it's going to be the area to watch over the next few days.

Looks like I found my answer and a whole article explanation to boot!

Hey @michaelrlowry.bsky.social I remember last year you made this great AOD graphic. What does it look like this year so far?

We're going to continue to struggle with messaging unless organizations have multiple ways of receiving and acting on rapid warnings issued in the middle of the night. My vote is for more weather aware Safety Officers and designees. I'd love to hear other thoughts. The loss of life is a tragedy.

Another active evening. Tornado south of McAlester, Oklahoma from the TDS. Long night ahead.

Quite the active afternoon underway. I like to look at the radar mosaics and pick a spot just to see the hundreds of little interactions occurring all at once.

It's pretty neat how the 24hr Reccurance Interval shows the flash flooding hotspots from the rainfall overnight and yesterday. Final round rolls through later this morning, but the river flooding will be an issue through at least early next week.

Just a reminder that this week could be the week when America decides to shoot a large portion of its own economy in the foot due to tariffs and congress could stop it at anytime. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/trum...

High Risks are rare for a reason. Only one High Risk Outlook was issued last year, so these days must be treated with care. We've been briefing this threat for the past week and preparations have been made, so now we'll monitor the developments from here. www.spc.noaa.gov/media/year-i...

A Severe Weather Outbreak is ongoing tonight (3/14/2025), and tomorrow (3/15/2025) a High Risk of Severe Storms has been issued. Long tracked strong tornadoes will be possible across Mississippi and Alabama with any of the storms likely to produce wind damage.
March 15, 2025 at 2:33 AM
Extreme Risks are serious situations and it's hard to watch these forecast verify, but hopefully the communities and emergency mangers have had time to prepare for the event.
March 15, 2025 at 2:15 AM
Watch the outbreak of fires across Oklahoma and the Southern Plains that took place earlier today (3/14/2025). Winds 50-60 mph with gusts up to 80 facilitated the vigorous fire spread.
March 15, 2025 at 1:50 AM
It's calming to have something else to focus on. With 850mb jet over 60kts, the severe risk on Tuesday March 4th in the South is pretty clear cut and has been for a few days now. Science doesn't sleep and the Spring Severe Weather Season is here right on cue.

Neat hawk sighting from my front yard. INaturalist says it's a red shoulder hawk. Can anyone confirm? #birds

Then across the Deep South severe thunderstorms will be likely even tornadoes will be possible along and ahead of the cold front. Good luck to everyone working the event!
February 14, 2025 at 10:03 PM
Active President's day weekend across the South. Heavy rain and flooding will be likely in Kentucky and into Tennessee with the storm starting Saturday afternoon. WPC issued a High Risk of Excessive Rainfall with significant river flooding forecast as well.
February 14, 2025 at 10:03 PM
The system qualifies as a moderate Atmospheric River and that coupled with the concerns near the Palisades and Eaton burn scars makes this a noteworthy event.
