Polly has been very _bad_ recently (as usual). She never stops eating and is massive.

She also goes berserk every morning and runs up the curtains or attacks the hamster. The other day Ruth was cleaning Perkins out and Polly kept […]

On Tuesday we had our house bonfire with baked potatoes and soup. We invited about 40 but only 20 odd turned up so we had loads of food. The bonfire went for ages because we’d found masses of wood. Amongst the objects burned were a sideboard, a chair, a tree trunk, a […]

Some of the blokes in the workshop are making a machine to do simulated simultaneous flushing of 15 loos at a time for Reckitts so that they can test how long their blue loo stuff lasts.

Last Saturday we went out for the day because it was semi-good weather. We took […]

I had to put petrol in a car today for the first time in over 4 years. Smelly old business isn’t it?

Of all the many crimes against the English language committed by people from the USA, I think the only one which I'd make a capital offence is that of refusing to pronounce the "L" in "soldering".

I’m not doing any work at the moment but tomorrow I have to learn FORTRAN (a stone age computer language) and build my project, which will take me to the end of term. Ruth is on a week of lectures and she starts 3 weeks of shifts in hospitals next week.

Last week was […]

If this letter is sunburnt it’s because I’m writing it outside.

My last exam is on Tuesday afternoon, so we’re going to have a rave up by going out for a meal and going to the piccies. Knowing my luck, it’ll probably pour with rain the minute I finish.

[Mission Impossible spoilers (not really)]

Mission Impossible Final Reckoning is preposterous. Donloe’s Inuit wife with him for 30-odd years, surrounded by books etc. Not a word of English.

I’ve been running a project this week for Y10 work experience, not something I’ve ever done before. This is what they came up with, designed and built from scratch from foamboard and 3D printed parts. It has a brushless generator.

We had a great time at the allotment.
Got a few jobs done - probably as much as I'd hoped.
The grandchildren don't really understand the concept of soaking the ground!

Had a splendid time telling them stories of my childhood at my grandmother's railway signal box.
The time the field caught fire […]

When it’s a day like today and you’re listening to Bob Harris’s Sounds of the 70s on the way home from work in your electric VW bus, waiting for trains is no problem.

I’ve replaced the frame on our Ikea Poäng chair because the fabric on the base gave up the ghost. Interesting to note the design changes to make it cheaper to manufacture but harder to put together. All the horizontal slats used to come glued in, now you have […]

Dear all, we are somewhere in the Peak District. The weather was OK today but is usually horrible. So far we’ve had rain, hail, snow and wind. The wind is very strong and means that you have to pedal down 1 in 10 gradients and get […]

I am having a nice holiday here in sunny Newcastle. Everyone seems to be a Geordie. Today I went on the Metro which is much better than any other metro in the world and we went to the quayside to see the bridges and a replica of the Golden Hinde.

We will send a […]

We got a ring last Saturday so now Ruth is skint but I will be next term. By the way, it’s gold with a massive diamond. Ruth has to use a splint to hold her finger in place.

Last week we got a Chinese cookery book but I don’t know when we’ll get round to cooking […]

Loads of things have happened lately, the most dead ace thing being Ruth and myself getting engaged yesterday (we were vacant before). The only problem is finding some money to buy a ring so she’ll have to make do with a ring pull, I think.

On Valentine’s Day I […]

It was Ruth’s birthday today and it was very nice thankyou. I bought her a boot (she wouldn’t let me buy both of them).

On Saturday we went into town on the train (primarily to buy Ruth’s present) and I bought a cassette deck for which we had to walk _miles_. It was […]

I’m writing this letter at 7.50 a.m. so you can tell how busy I am.
