... & it may well be 'gendered'/ (less likely for M to stand up for F against M) but this needs to be seen through the above filter IMO.

Sadly it's pretty rare for anyone (M/F) to defend a complete stranger (M/F) at all; we're all conditioned to avoid conflict and wait for a higher authority to sort it out. Also much higher risk of escalation to violence if one man calls out another. I hate that this is true but there we are...

Interesting that you talk about Suzanne Vega being an inspiration - I saw her in Stoke on the 8th and I'll be seeing you in Manchester tomorrow :-)

I guess you *could* put a front drum brake on there and it would improve matters slightly. But here we are pretending it was in any way a practical machine to begin with! 😀

I've a feeling it would be much harder to allow the small adjustments in direction that a bicycle needs to make but perhaps we're doing that in cars and not noticing, I don't know...
Also it would be illegal in the UK as it only has one brake. Some front wheel braking would be good!
