Hasan: The great irony is of course that Donald Trump is the son of an immigrant. The grandson of an immigrant and married to an immigrant. In fact two of his three wives were immigrants, proving yet again that immigrants will do the jobs that even Americans are not willing to do.

The thing about Trump’s tariffs is that they were both a terrible idea and very poorly executed in a way that’s actively driving up prices and killing the job market.

And rather than deal with that reality, they’re going to rig the economic numbers and just deny reality. Stupid all the way around.

What Danielle said.

According to the Yale Budget Lab, the average effective tariff rate in this economy right now is 18.2%

Let me put that another way.

President Trump has raised taxes on American businesses and consumers by -- on average -- 18.2%
A thing I really need people to keep in mind: 15% tariffs are high, historically speaking. 10% tariffs are high.

The average effective tariff rate before this term was just over 2%. Anything double-digits is high!

This 20 seconds is pure art. It’s like the essence of Trump - the fraud, the lies, the simplistic idiocy - is reduced to its singularity.

Nothing in high office, anywhere, will ever be this stupid again.

So.

Steel production is relatively small slice of the American economy.

Steel itself? *Very widely used throughout the American economy.

See the problem?

(I mean, see the problem beyond the entire global economy being held hostage to the whims of one guy who doesn’t understand the economy?)

I’m still baffled at how America took one of the basic principles of the presidency — the occupant shouldn’t be able to benefit financially from the office — and just said, nah, that just doesn’t count for this one guy.
An international trucking logistics firm is buying as much as *** $20 MILLION *** worth of President Donald Trump’s crypto coins to influence the administration’s trade policy.

Q: "Trump's strategy has been to announce these tariffs, then dial some back, pause them, make exceptions. Explain why you see this as a good negotiating strategy?"

They're going to pretend that this was all "The Art of the Deal" and not a tail-between-the-legs last-minute reversal after it was clear that Trump single-handedly set the global economy on fire.

But we all know what was being said just yesterday.

Just a reminder of some of the context around the TikTok ban: In 2020, Trump tried to ban it via executive order a couple months after K-pop fans used it to organize fake signups to Trump’s Tulsa rally, which led him to publicly overestimate how large the crowd size would be.

Trump's complaint about flags flying at half staff recalls how he resisted lowering the flag when McCain died. As we reported in "The Divider," his chief of staff John Kelly told him if he didn't, "when you die the public will come to your grave and piss on it." @sbg1.bsky.social
