Heading into Memorial Day weekend, I look at why we visit graves through a military lens and through a Christian frame.

Why We Visit Graves on Memorial Day - Christianity Today
Rituals of death can remind us of America’s “new birth of freedom”—and our rebirth and renewal through Christ’s sacrifice.

question for #civmilsky, what pieces of doctrine are to the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force what FM-1 is to the Army? I know they all have a capstone doctrine publication, but FM-1 is different from ADP-1 and I'm looking for the equivalents for the other services. Thanks!

29 April 1945 | The US Army soldiers liberated #Dachau - the first concentration camp created in Nazi Germany which became a model camp for the entire SS concentration camps system. Over 205,000 people were imprisoned there between 1933-1945. Some 41,500 were murdered there.

The Army changed what death meant in America. In both a logistical sense, and more meaningfully, in a spiritual sense, the sacrifices made by Army soldiers in the Civil War transformed how Americans buried their dead and what the experience meant to the nation.

Matt Gallagher first gave voice to #GWOT soldier experience through a blog he wrote while deployed to Iraq (2007-2009) as a platoon leader. This week Army 250 interviews Matt about the Army, writing, and the ghosts and great novels of war.

"A year-long CR would broadcast to U.S. adversaries that America is too caught up in internal dysfunction to notice the growing risks around the world."

$288 million dollars a day. That's what passing a continuing resolution instead of a budget bill costs the Department of Defense. It's a terrible waste of our money that Congress won't do it's most important job.

Last night I taught my new military, society, politics course & focused on tropes associated w/ veterans (victim, hero, villain).

Students' takeaway: there is no single veteran experience; veterans are just ppl

Also, stereotyping is distancing & prevents connecting w/others.

First up, the Civil War. Iowa sent around 80,000 soldiers to fight for the Union, one of the highest per capita levels of any state. And in 1861, the battle of Athens spilled over and involved soldiers in Iowa.

Was reading Andrew Meier's Morgenthau and learned that JFK was the first president born in the 20th century.

Made me think...when will we have a president who was born in the 21st century? The Constitution requires the president to be 35, so could we see a Gen Z president in 2036?

In a conversation about veterans and belonging, a friend reminded me that St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order, was a veteran. So many false starts and misguided efforts, only to find purpose in faith and love for all people.

A beautiful story to reflect on at year's end.
