Among the many Iowans who gave their lives in World War 2 were the 5 Sullivan brothers from Waterloo Iowa. They enlisted with the stipulation they serve together. They were all aboard the USS Juneau when it was torpedoed during the Battle of Guadalcanal.

One of the most famous Civil War soldiers out of Iowa was General Grenville Dodge who was both a spymaster and logistician (railroads) for the Union Army. Like the CIA and Amtrak in one.
