Gobsmacked to meet this glorious golden being today. So much so that this fungus has parachuted straight into my ‘Top 10 Most Brilliant Mushrooms’ list…

Phaeolepiota aurea, the Golden Bootleg.

Golden Bootleg is a large, rare, golden coloured mushroom. A friend found this patch growing in a nearby woodland so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to meet this astonishing mushroom. The fruits smell sweet and somehow peculiar. Other people suggest almondy, which I can nearly be convinced about. This very rare mushroom has only been recorded a handful of times in Cornwall so it was a real joy to finally meet. The architecture of a Meadow Waxcap (Cuphophyllus pratensis)

Meadow Waxcaps are large, gilled agarics, which are relatively frequent in unimproved grasslands (and also woodlands I find). Their cap starts almost salmon pink and ends a tan-orange. Their stem is firm and white. Altogether it’s a very attractive mushroom. This sequence of photos shows the beautiful gill architecture which seem almost like the great arches of cathedrals. In fact some cathedrals and other buildings were inspired by these kinds of arches. Underside of meadow Waxcap Close up of gills

The Wrinkled Club (Clavulina rugosa) is often found next to footpaths, as these gorgeous specimens were. Their small white clubs are often very wrinkled. Close up of Wrinkled Club fungus

What’s the best colour in nature and why is it blue 🍄📷
Blue Roundhead (Stropharia caerulea) mushrooms in grassland. These fungi are generally pale with a beautiful tinge of blue green. Parrot Waxcap (Gliophorus psittacinus) in grassland today. This colourful mushroom is often shades of green, but the example in the photo is a lovely blue-green.

On this Samhain or All Hallows’ Eve, here are some mysterious fungi from the thin places of the world 🍄👻

🧙‍♀️Witch’s Hat (Hygrocybe conica)
🖐️ Dead Man’s Fingers (Xylaria polymorpha)
👺 Devil’s Fingers (Clathrus archeri)
👻 Spooky Spindles (Clavaria fumosa)

Hygrocybe conica is also known as Blackening Waxcap or Witch’s Hat as mushrooms pointed cap gradually turns jet black. Spooky factor 8/10 Dead Man’s Fingers (Xylaria polymorpha) emerge from dead logs and look like just like the charred or blackened fingers of long dead people. Spooky factor 7/10 Clathrus archeri is more widely known as Devil’s Fingers. This fungus hatches from an underground egg and deep red tentacles splay out like an octopus. Each tentacle is covered in stinking brown slime that attracts flies to the smell. The flies then dutifully spread the fungal spores. Spooky factor 9/10 Spooky Spindles are really Smoky Spindles (Clavaria fumosa) of course. I’m fascinated by Flesh-coloured fingers rise from the ground. This particular clump was in a very old graveyard, like the long-dead animating back to life. Spooky factor 7/10

Yellow Stagshorn (Calocera viscosa) surrounded by moss and Ivy on a woodland floor. This jelly fungus always grows on rotting conifer wood and gets its name because the small fruiting body resembles deer antlers. Calocera means ‘beautiful and waxy’ and viscosa means ‘viscous’ or ‘sticky’
