Medical historian specializing in alcohol & drug policy @BrockUniversity. Trolls neo-temperance misinformation for laughs. Allergic to acronyms, fyi. And jargon. Posts do not represent my workplace. Often they just represent a current fever dream.
[edit] According to this article Canada "dominated" this top 10 list of universities. We had 3; Britain had 5. Clearly "we" don't dominate in math. www.narcity.com/canadian-uni...
Canadian universities dominated the top 10 of a new world's best universities ranking
But we don't have the number one school anymore. 👀

This is the second time in two weeks that weather has forced me to deal with Air Canada booking staff. I have to say it was not as unpleasant as expected although the flight changes still suck.

I just learned that celebrated Canadian military historian Tim Cook passed away yesterday. I didn't know him well but he was always generous and supportive of my mediocre forays into military history. I'm gutted. My condolences to his family. What a terrible loss.

In case you were wondering if the CDC has been politicized this is at the top of their web pages.

Senate's Social Affairs, Science & Technology committee is deliberating bills on alcohol labeling & advertising. The list of witnesses is troubling. It includes only people involved in the public health & temperance industry providing a skewed, harm-focused perspective. Where is the balance?

Anti-vaping rhetoric based on unfounded arguments about its harm leads to smokers choosing to continue to smoke. Great example of Illich's specific counter productivity in which something intended to have one effect does the opposite. www.bmj.com/content/391/...
Vaping misperceptions must be challenged
Mahase reports on the increasing number of people in England who smoke both cigarettes and e-cigarettes (vapes).1 Despite substantial evidence that vaping exposes users to much lower levels of toxican...

How many of those generals, listening to little Pete and the Orange menace tell them how to do their job and suggest unconstitutional actions, were thinking that a military coup suddenly makes sense? How many civilians were thinking the same thing?

Seems that our premier has been tagged speeding by a speed camera but couldn't talk his way out if it. Now he is on a campaign.

I was raised to believe that hate is a very powerful and corrupting emotion, and brings you closer to satan. So for a politician to admit at an evangelical gathering that he hates his opponents is pretty astounding.

Wasn't this how Kristallnacht got started? (thanks for the correction, it's been a long day)

You go to the mechanic to have a little rattle checked out. You walk out with an estimate of $4000 repairs on a car that might be worth $5K (it's well loved ok?). It is indeed one of those days.

So apparently those who calculate these things are recommending 7000 steps per day is better than 10,000 because people are so stressed about hitting 10,000 it negates any positive health effects. What!? Unrealistic health recommendations cause unhealthy stress? I'll drink to that.

In case you can't access this and since the abstract is cut off at the bottom the answer is, to put it simply, yes.
Many researchers have suggested that alcohol may have been an important factor in developing early states. Basically, it's supposed to have helped social cohesion, improved cooperation, and reduced friction among people living cramped together.

Well, did it? New research on the subject out now.

So Diageo is closing its Canadian Crown Royal bottling plant to move production to the US. I am not sure if boycotting Diageo is even possible given the extent of their portfolio. Is this another scheme to get me to stop drinking?!

Carney may be lifting tariffs on US goods. Doesn't mean Canadians will buy them.

To Canadians who talk about elbows up: it only works if you don't put them down when it's inconvenient. So my friends crossing the border or buying American because they "can't live without" certain US products don't get that in a war (even a trade war) actual sacrifice is needed.
