OpenAI pirated large numbers of books and used them to train models.

OpenAI then deleted the dataset with the pirated books, and employees sent each other messages about doing so.

A lawsuit could now force the company to pay $150,000 per book, adding up to billions in damages.

I would also just like to point out that to whatever extent nonprofits and churches *do* step up to help meet some portion of the need that is being cruelly inflicted on the poor for no reason, that is time, energy, and money that cannot now be used to meet *other* needs
Faith leaders — as well as faith-based food banks — have long argued they absolutely cannot independently handle the raw number of people currently served by government food assistance programs.

They argued it again last week in Congress, calling the idea a "lie". religionnews.com/2025/10/30/f...

Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity.

'Artificial intelligence (AI) models are 50% more sycophantic than humans, an analysis published this month has found.'

Another reason why human tutors matter (and why 'Rate My Professor' type evaluations of them are problematic).
AI chatbots are sycophants — researchers say it’s harming science
Nature asked researchers who use artificial intelligence how its propensity for people-pleasing affects their work — and what they are doing to mitigate it.

My friend Andrew Lih @fuzheado.bsky.social is a freakin hero. A gunman came into his Wikipedia event, and he grabbed and disarmed him. Thanks to him and another brave volunteer, no one was hurt—not even the gunman.

Now let’s ask why we accept a society where this can happen at any large gathering.

Nerd dream!
I just heard JSTOR has an option to sign up as an independent researcher, with access to 100 articles a month for free?! That's pretty cool!
You do have to give them your email to register, then sign up with a password and select the Independent Researcher role, but it seems legit!

Can confirm: the amount of gym bros who absolutely leave hot yoga within the *warmup*… They cannot hang. Zero mental toughness next to a 100 lb college girl.
Random thoughts on Hegseth speech:
- Having done both old-school Army PT and yoga, I would pay a thousand dollars to watch an infantry platoon get absolutely fucking smoked in a hot yoga class
