I came across this scene while working in Churchill for @polarbearsinternational.org. These boulders encrusted in ice give me hope for colder temps, which will eventually freeze Hudson Bay. Once the bay freezes, the polar bears will be able to get back out to hunt.

@polarbearsinternational.org - A mother polar bear and her cub wait on Hudson Bay’s rocky shore. Taken Nov 9 — still no sea ice. The sooner the bay freezes, the better for them, so they can eat.

Polar bears were never meant to live in the rocks... but sometimes they do, like this younger bear walking along the shoreline on Hudson Bay as he waits for the bay to freeze.

The tundra looks different this year—maybe from Churchill’s dry summer and low rainfall. Some say the ponds are draining as permafrost melts. I don't have proof to support this idea, but I hope someone’s doing good science to confirm or deny.

This scene was shot in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, on November 6. As you can see, there was no measurable snow last week. It was chilly, though, with the wind and temperatures near 16°F. Not the normal temps and snow I'm used to. The scenery is still beautiful, however.

This season in Churchill is by far the warmest I've ever experienced since 1989, when I started visiting. These ptarmigan near Hudson Bay have molted white right on schedule, but without the snow that is usually here, they're easy prey.
