Recent research shows that polar bears on the sea ice show more variation in weight gain on the sea ice than previously thought, which may make them more vulnerable to loss of summer sea ice. Learn more ⬇️ https://pbears.org/42E814u

Another beautiful evening in Kyoto 🇯🇵 Traditional dinner + learning about the life of a Maiko—an apprentice geiko (“dance child”) training in dance, music, and song. She was just 18, deeply committed and happy with her path.

Just chilling in Tokyo before our Japan Winter Wildlife Tour begins. This series is from our hotel window, looking down on the pier in Yokohama, and a couple of pics from a trip to Map and Yodobashi Camera. Hoping we have a lot of snow with the snow monkeys!

I came across this scene while working in Churchill for @polarbearsinternational.org. These boulders encrusted in ice give me hope for colder temps, which will eventually freeze Hudson Bay. Once the bay freezes, the polar bears will be able to get back out to hunt.

Polar bears were never meant to live in the rocks... but sometimes they do, like this younger bear walking along the shoreline on Hudson Bay as he waits for the bay to freeze.

The tundra looks different this year—maybe from Churchill’s dry summer and low rainfall. Some say the ponds are draining as permafrost melts. I don't have proof to support this idea, but I hope someone’s doing good science to confirm or deny.

This scene was shot in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, on November 6. As you can see, there was no measurable snow last week. It was chilly, though, with the wind and temperatures near 16°F. Not the normal temps and snow I'm used to. The scenery is still beautiful, however.
