Not only should the US not be allowed to host the World Cup - we shouldn’t be allowed to compete in it. We should be banned from international competition.

In Fahrenheit 451, the abolition of reading began with tech companies simplifying books into summaries that you could read in five minutes. Because people no longer engaged with the texts, they forgot how to think. Then came the book-burnings.

“Just calm down and let people enjoy chatgpt.” Sorry, no. I find it creepy that folks are treating a machine that mimics human speech as their friend / therapist. It is feeding you lies. It is destroying your thinking abilities. Shut it off. Talk to other humans. Go outside.

You know, all they really need to do is start listing the tariff on products and making people pay it separately like sales tax, and they'd be gone in a day.

Ideally they'd wait until you got the register to tack it on too, just to really rub it in.

Alternatively, fascism was the logical endpoint for a political party which decided years ago that appealing to racists and homophobes was beneficial to its political project of funneling money to powerful corporate interests and disempowering labor.

…and those who called them fascists were right.
I am not blaming Democrats for Republicans becoming fascists. I am blaming people who overused "fascist" for years for removing the power of that word and gutting it of meaning, and making it useless now that we need it.
Something I warned would happen.

Aristotle was actually right, there is such a thing as "natural slaves".

Today we call them "conservatives", and they will do anything they can to turn themselves into docile servants to anyone with wealth and power.

Reading about the insane numbers of books that ordinary working people used to read a hundred years ago feels like seeing pictures of the Pacific Ocean back when it teemed with whales. Hard to comprehend what we’ve lost.

Not very long ago we believed we were the smartest generation in history, and it feels like overnight we just accepted that people are getting dumber and there’s nothing we can do about it. But it doesn’t have to be like this. We have to return reading to the center of culture.
