A US federal judge today briefly delayed the trial of three men charged in a scheme to bribe Honduran government officials for supply contracts, allowing the government to review the case as part of a broader pause on anti-corruption enforcement. US District Judge Jacqueline Becerra rescheduled the trial of Georgia businessman Carl Zaglin, banker Aldo Marchena and former Honduran procurement official Francisco Roberto Cosenza Centeno for April 28, a three-week delay from the original date. “The case appears to be in flux,” the judge said at the end of a 30-minute virtual hearing this afternoon. Zaglin, Marchena and Cosenza were charged in late 2023 over their alleged roles in a scheme to secure contracts worth $10 million with an entity that procured goods for the Honduran National Police. Zaglin, the owner of a Georgia-based manufacturer of law enforcement uniforms and accessories, had agreed with Marchena and others to pay bribes to Honduran officials, including Cosenza, for the supply contracts, prosecutors allege. The case is one of several pending for trial that was affected by a pause on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act enforcement ordered last week by President Donald Trump. Under the order, US Attorney General Pam Bondi was directed to review existing FCPA cases. “We understand that [the US attorney general] has prioritized review of indicted cases and we are doing everything we can to expedite that review,” Eli Rubin, an assistant US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, told the judge today. “We do not know when that review will be complete.” In addition to the trial delay, the judge ordered the government to file updates every two weeks on the status of the review and its effect on the case. Craig Gillen, a lawyer for Zaglin, said he believes the case lands “in the strike zone” of the Trump-ordered review. “This is exactly what the [attorney general] should review. We welcome that review,” he said.
