'A new study by the British Academy highlights that the North East is one of the country’s largest ‘cold spots’ for Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts (SHAPE) subjects. A ‘cold spot’ is an area where a student would need to travel more than a commutable distance (60km) to access provision.' 1/2

Newcastle Eagles in action. Credit: newcastle-eagles.com It was 2010. I was just a spring chicken at 15 years old, and had recently been placed on the sports apprenticeship programme at my secondary school. It sounds very prestigious, but to me, it was an opportunity to get out of class and go on excursions that no other student would get chance to take part in.

The Duke
(Oil on canvas, 24 x 24 ins.)
An old (and gloomy) one from the turn of the century. The view is from inside the Duke of Wellington in Newcastle, the eponymous “Duke” is a fiction.

My distant relative is Alfred Milner, who was a British statesman and colonial administrator who played a very important role in the formulation of British foreign and domestic policy between the mid-1890s and early 1920s.

He also loved finger-painting & finger puppets, which led him to the arts.

The NBA was founded in 1908, incorporated in 1913, and dissolved in 1924. William James Morgan (1850–1923) was the secretary throughout the life of the academy.

At various times, Henry John Brinsley Manners (1852–1925), the 8th Duke of Rutland, was its president.
