Two new works in progress, exploring my visit to Derry/Londonderry a couple of years ago.

Butterfly Boy
(Acrylic and collage on canvas panel, 10x8 in)
I spent the weekend at a science fiction fanzine fan convention, catching up with buddies from around the world, and while I was there I donated this little curiosity to an auction. Much fun was had.

I like to think about work in progress over lunch. The tulips are nice too.

I admit that X,Y and Z are unknown to me.

Messenger of Freedom
(Acrylic on block canvas, 9 x 12 in)
The latest in my series of Croatian "Kastela" paintings.

The House by the Cypress Trees
(Acrylic on box canvas, 12 x 9 in)
Somewhere else in Croatia, the silence broken only by the wind in the trees.

The Meteorologist
(Acrylic on canvas board, 8x8 in)
The latest in this occasional series of imaginary portraits, finished only a couple of days ago. No doubt there will be more.

King of the Castle
(Acrylic on canvas board, 8x8 in)
Something else from 2023, spruced up a little. The castle is mine, but that’s not me.

The Commuter
(Acrylic on canvas board, 8x8 in)
A bit of fun from 2023, given some tidying up last night. One of the imaginary portrait series.

A busy evening, finally pulling together several paintings in need of revision or completion, and now on the table. I was beginning to think I was lost, but maybe I’m on a path again. One still to complete fully, but I’ll be making individual postings. Watch this space.

Pere et Mere Tanguy’s Night Out (Oil and postcard on board, 12 x 13.5 ins.)

Here’s an oddity from far in the past. It resulted from an exercise in which a postcard was stuck down and then extended. The postcard has faded now but I still have a soft spot for the picture.

Coffee Shop Laptop
(Acrylic on canvas, board, 8 x 8 in.)
First time I’ve used a fluorescent paint in the mix. I’m told it’s relatively archival in mixtures.

Yummies
(Acrylic and collage on block canvas, 24x30 cm)
Another piece of Newcastle architecture. I love the disjunction of the cheap and brash modern fascia with the fake medievalism above.

The Pontificator
(Oil on board, dimensions n/k)
Another old one, from even longer ago than the previous two. Cut down from its original size, after a slightly different version was painted.

Jiggery Pokery
(Oil on canvas, 24x24 in)
Awful photograph, I know, but the multiple glazes and varnish defeated my photography skills. A curious one this, again from the turn of the century. Based on photos taken at the eponymous junkshop.

The Duke
(Oil on canvas, 24 x 24 ins.)
An old (and gloomy) one from the turn of the century. The view is from inside the Duke of Wellington in Newcastle, the eponymous “Duke” is a fiction.

The Domino Player
(Mixed media on board, 8x8 in.)
Not strictly speaking a portrait, but definitely from my imagination, so let’s keep the theme running.

The Green Children of Woolpit
(acrylic on card, 10x10 in)
Not exactly an imaginary portrait like the others I’ve posted, but seems to fit here. Inspired by real events in the 12th century (allegedly).

The Young Fisherman
(Acrylic on board, 9 x 9 in)
The boats were in Madeira, I think; the Fisherman was in my head.

Redjacket
(acrylic on canvas board, 8x8 in)
One more imaginary portrait.

The Botanist
(acrylic on canvas panel, 8x8 in)

I’m in a creative low spot. Short of visual stimulus and not inclined to go out looking for it in this cold weather. Back in 2020, when going out wasn’t really an option, I turned inwards, to my imagination. This fellow was the result.

Pollock’s Toy Museum
(Acrylic on board, 10x10 in)
I’m late to be posting my Xmas card here, but it holds up as a standalone painting, so here it is.

At the Lighting Emporium
(Collage and acrylic, 12x22 in)
I started this one in May last year and I finally gave in to its pleas for completion this week. A real curiosity in terms of technique and subject matter, I think.
