Well, there’s less nazis here for one thing
I like READY OR NOT. It functioned as a horror comedy because - even if the hand was tipped - the protagonist could’ve died. I hope the sequel leans into being more of a comedic action movie because you can’t flippantly kill the og lead - audiences will hate that - so it’s not load bearing.

I’m agnostic/ambivalent about the rise of people watching things with subs on. I would be more into it if it boosted people’s vocabulary. Unfortunately the only new word it’s taught people is squelching.

THE TOXIC AVENGER (25): It’s hard to get movies made these days and I was willing to do some of the heavy lifting, and it’s very Troma in that way where it needs even more than that. I liked the violence, I guess, the mop deaths were fun. I don’t dislike it.

I hate Spotify lists. And they often come from people who also say “Fuck AI” and they’re the exact same problem. All modern bullshit convenience is the same thing. And yes, that also includes social media, it’s just that some of it has more practical uses. But we’re helping destroy the middle class.

People defending Paul Dano: Have you seen THERE WILL BE BLOOD? Cause, Tarantino? He has a point.

The reason why LA traffic going insane with running yellows at top speed obsesses me is because there was just an accident where two cars crashed because of it and it sent one into The Oaks, which is where I was standing about five minutes before.

One of the things about Tarantino is he’s always been a provocateur. For a lot of people that is more engaging in their twenties and high school years than middle age because by then they have conformed and he hasn’t.

I feel like now that they’re available on 4K and streaming people talk less about THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES. Perhaps waiting for things is good and constant instant gratification is bad? I dunno. (I do, it’s bad)

I see a lot of lose/loose typos, probably the most normie word mix up. But when sometimes types “loose their shit” I picture a general saying “on my command” and - like - bomb bay doors opening.

My thought whenever people complain about Tarantino’s comments on movies:

As we’re in December my sense is that ONE BATTLE is probably too “Otto’s jacket” for best picture. Best chances are screenplay, Del Toro and maybe Chase Infiniti, with director a possible. Penn and DiCaprio are previous winners so the nom would be the win, Del Toro has one but it’s been a while.

It is so wild how bad Hollywood has become about synergy and overexposure. There’s no way a star would have two movies coming out within three months of each other unless one was severely delayed. Whereas now, Amanda Seyfried has a movie coming out on 12/19 and another one six days later.

Though JAWS was THE film, ALIENS - in a lot of ways - was the deal sealed. So I don’t know if I can be critical of it. Cameron - like Spielberg - is a great populist and kinda a terrible human being, but this is “my child” or pet in modern terms, so I can’t really find flaws, even if they are there.

One aspect of techbro filmmakers is it feels like George Lucas invented a masturbation machine because he had a sore wrist where James Cameron is inventing the most elaborate jerk off machine and Ang Lee is infusing that with ayahuasca. It’s just, all of this cool, but I don’t know if it’s art.

EYES WIDE SHUT is about many things, and is probably the film that most emphasizes Tom Cruise’s nose, but it’s partly about how straight white men can be totally ignorant of the weird sex around them and when they find out feel left out of something they would never want if they didn’t know.

I don’t like conspiracy theories, so what happened with Shout’s MIAMI VICE UHD? Did they not realize they needed to have the theatrical cut in 4K (if not as the primary/only) and that fans would revolt if the director’s cut was the only one on UHD? On top of, how do you not get MIAMI NICE involved?

At a certain point many film critics had to start writing TV reviews. I agree with Tarantino, TV reviews are worthless (mostly because it’s like reviewing a book by each chapter), but it was work and there was BREAKING BAD/MAD MEN. Prestige TV is now dead. Sucks to write about the IT prequel, etc.

EYES WIDE SHUT coming out in the height of the Epstein files you would think would lead to a better discussion about it.

One of the things that makes Kubrick so great is that he often asks “what would the character do, but also what would you do?” Tom Cruise is with a prostitute talking about money for acts, and - if you haven’t - what would you ask a prostitute to do? Can you quantify your desires into prices?

I think there’s broken logic about supporting people who have been married to insane people. Marrying an insane person (be it Kanye or Tom Cruise) when you know they’re insane makes you worse than them. These people can’t be victims when it’s business decision.
November 30, 2025 at 1:03 AM
EYES WIDE SHUT is partly about how some people aren’t interesting enough to be invited into pervosity. “Can you not be weird about sex? Yes it’s it’s stupid and we wear costumes because it’s silly but we don’t need your ‘but you’re wearing a costume’ energy ruining our fantasies.”
November 30, 2025 at 12:38 AM
Watching EYES WIDE SHUT. Gonna have to limit myself. I love when stars were actors and this is the end of Cruise’s “I’m also an actor, not just a star” period. Spiritual prequel to UNDER THE SILVER LAKE. Masterpiece. Fucking the system was gunning for fucking Kubrick and didn’t watch it.

One of the problems with the IP/MCU-ifacation of modern cinema is that audience are now trained to want to go to movies for pornographic (but not sexually pornographic) bullshit. It hurts future artists, modern artists and makes cinema meaningless.
