This has been the case for Riot and League of Legends in specific for a long time. Part of the complication tends to come from how many hands typically touch a piece of art. I've seen splash arts for some of their champions change several times even after release as different artists make edits.

it should also be noted that many of these pieces did not have individualized credit in LOR, just the studio
