Infosec, Trust & Safety, but mostly screaming into the void

Shocking how quickly people pivoted from "copyright is over-enforced and the RIAA is bad" to "copyright is under-enforced and genAI is bad."

Hard policy questions here about how to reward artistic creation, but the pivot from "remix culture" to "wait, not like that" is fast enough to give whiplash.

I truly do not understand Strategy. I think at this point they just assume that $1 of book value is worth more than $1 to shareholders.

Which, admittedly, is how it did work for them for a few years.

Are you fucking joking, Julie?

I can’t think of anything that would inspire me less, if I had the misfortune of working at Accenture.

If he really believes this, he should disband the President’s Council on Fitness and introduce a new Council on Sitting Around, right?

Fun fact: the Times’ editorial policy is that a politician’s age can only be questioned at 79 *and one half* years (81.5 for women), which is why they didn’t focus on this topic at all before the election.

Pretty sure I’m hallucinating.

Uh…

Huh?

They think Americans are so stupid.

Do we know why Trump's toy plane is on the table in front of him?

Is it like a security blanket kinda thing? He just likes having his model plane with him when meeting with the press?

Will you look at these morons? I sold my tech stocks last year.

“Trump”, “Saudi”, and “Blockchain”, all in the same headline, so you *know* it’s definitely not corrupt.

A point I have been making is that, with industry leading false match rates of 1/100,000, if you make a database of 1m undocumented residents, any random person on the street will match on average 10 people!

I know everyone says Trump is cooked and I sorta think he is, too, but...

...kinda strange that his approval rating exceeds Obama and Bush's second-term approval at this point in time.

Is there something about being a tech CEO that makes you completely misunderstand dystopian social criticism?

Like, I’m just waiting for some Theil Fellow to propose a reality TV show where criminals have to run away from hunters and, if the man who’s running escapes, he gets to go free.

I love this Jill Lepore comment.

I had a CS professor whom I remember being disappointed at how so many of his students were just notching a STEM degree so they could go work as a quant on Wall Street and make money. “Certifying rich kids to go get rich”, he said, or something like that.

Can't help but think of this: www.youtube.com/shorts/jgerV...

I think it should give us at least a little pause when directors start talking about how AI affects sportswear or soda manufacturing.

I think that’s right. People hoping, on some level, for a crash should be careful what they wish for.

There's a joke in here about Kash Patel and his hostility to the Five Eyes, but I can't figure out what it is.

It's sort of amazing that, in the US, in order to pay your taxes online, you have to sign up to receive spam emails from some tech bro's MBA student project.

Seems relevant when economically irrational policies are being pushed (tariffs, cutting SNAP and healthcare subsidies). Cui bono?
