Great to see these two sit together talking about the importance of medical research and vaccine. We still have common ground, isn’t it? Then Senator Cassidy said the tax subsidy only affected 7% of the population. It is not worthwhile to shut down the government for just 7% population…

It is university’s fault, researcher’s fault, previous administration’s fault, not my fault.

Summit park is the crown jewel of Blue Ash.

Cincinnati Children’s hospital is the crown jewel of Cincinnati.

NIH is the crown jewel of the United States.

What is the crown jewel of Ohio? This is missing.

As much as everything is awful and horrifying, having someone make me laugh is wonderful. Thanks @brau1io.bsky.social.

Thank you for your dedication and passion for the humanity, Dr. Collins.
Francis Collins, longtime NIH director with bipartisan bona fides*, retires as of yesterday.

He returned to NIH in 2023 to focus on research in his own lab, in the NIH in-house intramural research campus.

His letter seems to imply he wasn’t ready to leave. NIH is being torn down. 1/🧪 #academicsky

Five things I did last week.
1. Submit critiques for study section on time.
2. Had a mentor-mentee meeting with mentees from Europe and US.
3. Found interesting mutations in a patient with mysterious liver disease.
4. Prepared JIT as requested by PO.
5. Counting apoptosis cells from 144 wells.

First they cut the research funding. Now they cut the event for patients, families, and healthcare providers to raise awareness and support each other.

FaceTime my Dad in Shanghai this morning. I told him what happened with the US. He said but democracy and science are what make America great. My 77 year old Dad doesn’t speak English. He may not understand how my zebrafish research can lead to cure for liver disease, but he gets this.

I was an “overhead cost”.

I was a beaker washer, agar plate pourer, research secretary. I was paid by “overhead cost” fees. Loved it.

Those “overhead cost” jobs allowed this rural kid to become a physician.

I am having a really hard time reviewing grants for an incoming NIH study section. All the hours I put in reviewing them, no matter how good they are, will any of them even get funded? These brilliant ideas, potential new therapies, can be easily slaughtered. I can’t and will not give up though.

Last November, I was attending the NIDDK corner at AASLD to talk to their director and my PO. My R01 was scored at the 1st percentile just a couple of weeks prior. I told the person next to me that I had this unsettling feeling. He said not worry. Now I know why I felt that way. I was right…

I was at the first March for Science. Was amazing and positive-focused. We have real agency! Speak up is the first step. Action is critical for impact however. Hitting likes and reposts (like this one!) should just be a first step.

Buckle up!
New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH.

No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts.

And no indication how long the pause will last.
