I think Russian intelligence services cannot believe their good fortune at everything that is happening right now. This is a bonanza across the board. The vicious attack on Ukraine, nutters at the FBI, Gabbard at DNI, shredding of CI capabilities. A monumental tragedy for the West.
This is incredible. Knock yourself out, Russian intel services. “A person familiar with the matter …said analysts at the agency were verbally informed that they were not to follow or report on Russian threats, even though this had previously been a main focus for the agency.” Cc @ciaranm.bsky.social

If you were the Kremlin, why would you make any concessions right now? You have every incentive to demand it all: land, sanctions relief, demilitarisation, neutralisation & no troops in Ukraine. If it collapses, Trump likely to blame Ukraine anyway, allowing continuation of war on better terms.

I’m less convinced about her recommendations here.
I was very surprised about the topic of the interview - until a friend suggested that the President is campaigning for President of …
Late to this but Lagarde is in very good (and cheeky!) form in this interview.

One can nitpick her proposed strategy.

But her meta message is exactly right: Europe has agency. Our worst enemy is fatalism.

In my note today, I argue:
- While weak, EU growth is at the global average, and getting better. US is the outlier, and slowing.
- Next year will see European reforms in the right direction. In the US (and probably China) they’ll be in the wrong direction

Bulgaria and Romania belong fully to the Schengen area.

Removing internal controls at land borders is the last hurdle.

I welcome the positive outcome of informal discussions in Budapest today.

The Council’s formal decision is next.

Let 2025 see Schengen become stronger.

I wrote about yesterday’s Russian missile strike on Ukraine, what Putin might have been trying to signal by using a “new” intermediate-range missile with multiple warheads, and how seriously to take that signal. www.economist.com/europe/2024/...
