Once, when I was a waiter in a gaudy "castle lodge" hotel restaurant, I was serving a random traveler, an ostensibly well-off businessman from somewhere out west. He was ample, fat and fit; he dressed like a melodrama villain, shined his shoes (or had someone else shine them) and waxed his moustache. He stayed in our hotel for 5 days, and with each meal he ate there, he tipped me handsomely. On the 5th day, he took the check, pulled his golden pen from his vest pocket, signed over the large gratuity I had come to expect from him, and then he handed me the pen, saying, "You keep that, and remember, that's the best tip you will ever, ever get, young man," and then he literally put on his great coat and headed to the front desk to check out. I took a look at the golden pen, and on its side, in big black letters, were the words "DON'T SMOKE FUCK" He was right. I took this tip, and it's tops
