As we all wait for Callais to come down, our piece showing that Shelby County increased the racial turnout gap in most of the covered parts of the country has cleared the replication check and is incoming at JOP.

Gutting the VRA was bad, actually.

If you're a leftist in the US all of your opponents, except for the President maybe, are unhappy after today & perhaps that's a nice thought to fall asleep to & keep at it for another tomorrow

No small pt. of me thinks today speaks for the bonding power of NYC, this amazing place is people together

last 20 seconds of this clip has me completely gobsmacked—with equal pts. relish and unease
Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?

MAMDANI: I've spoken about--

TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.

the man likes ratings, but also: did they bond over being outsiders who defied & embarrassed coastal party leadership?

did mayor-elect appeal to the real estate developer—"I want to build more housing, your people want to make money building more housing, how can we make this work for everybody?"
I think this clip is the key to understanding why Trump acted the way he did with Mamdani. His world revolves around TV ratings.

"I tell you, the press has eaten this thing up."

Similar logic saw Dems supporting resolutions extolling the police only to see their criminal justice reform bill get spiked and still get 4+ years of “soft on crime” coverage and attacks.
BREAKING: The House of Representatives voted 285–98 in favor of a resolution condemning socialism.

Eighty-six Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

how calling Trump a fascist is somehow inciting the assassination attempts, but calling Mamdani a socialist or a communist isn't equally inciting a threat?

is it because subconsciously they know fascism is an existential threat to the constitutional republic but not socialism? 🤔
1. lol

2. today's White House meeting with Mamdani is currently scheduled as "closed press," which means it might not be much of a showdown

Anyone keeping names for the pardons list of the first 100 days of the next Dem presidential administration? If you are not promising to pardon these good people, I am not voting for you.

In sorting my own thoughts about the moment, I began writing about the way science is being used by bad actors under the guise of "evidence-based medicine". I also talk about the limits of our ability to fully boil down evidence into axioms that make subjectivity irrelevant.
The myth of an apolitical science — Jessica Kant
What we might call the modern anti-science movement, starting with efforts to hide the obvious linkage between tobacco and cancer, and the rise of “climate skepticism”, has grown in scale enormously i...

Bracketing the jfc he just said that, I can't help thinking here how this reveals "tough on crime" views on human agency, dignity, & deserving leniency: When ordinary people do heinous acts they get full weight of the law, but when people in power do heinous acts excuses abound, "things happen"
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

When institutions show you who they are, believe them the first time
So Harvard is keeping this guy, but Claudine Gay had to step down over ginned up plagiarism accusations and bad-faith accusations of anti-Semitism.

Got it.
Larry Summers tells @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social
he’s stepping back from all public commitments in light of his messages with Epstein, saying he is “deeply ashamed” and hopes “to rebuild trust and repair relationships.”

He will continue teaching.

"If you had a check in the mail, you could sign that check over to one of a handful of unregulated insurance oligopolies. What? No, not indirect gov't subsidies to the insurance corps. channeled through the illusion of consumer choice. Markets!"

i have a crazy idea: imagine an economy that doesnt completely implode every 7 years

My take after #MeToo is this may have the motivations backwards: They're going to appeal to power in order to protect the existence of men who rape teens.

Protecting powerful men is incidental to the core goal of protecting a space for men they believe *ought to be* supplied teenage girls.
This is how they’re going to do it. Legitimize rape of teens to protect powerful men.
It’s monsters all the way down.
