Ditto for aspiring writers. When I was a script reader, occasionally I’d see a slush pile script that was written as first in a series and they were ALWAYS unsatisfying because they didn’t resolve anything
A lot of aspiring novelists tell me their book is the first in a series.
Don’t. Just don’t.
Ambition is great. Getting through the door is better. Your first novel can lend itself to continuation, but it shouldn’t require it. Just tell the best complete story you can.
