Genuinely, as a woman, what is the incentive here *not* to be a nude slutty (complimentary) snake-fire-dancer when being virginal gets you Cathy's fate?

I guess this is the question that The Witch (2015) answers pretty definitively

It's not a great movie, but it is a *movie*

that is important (and to its credit, not a boring one)

That's because these movies are never from the perspective of actual Satanists (or pagans, depending on the situation).

I was a bit off, but anyway. From the great @parthenoid.bsky.social

Smart. What kind of gin?

I read about the series in a folk horror book, so while it's not "horror" per se, there must be some elements that work within the themes

Can't remember where I read it, maybe We Don't Go Back? But Michele Dotrice is well known as a sitcom mom (Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em), and watching this rape scene while masturbating is basically like... Patty Duke in a similar sitch

Hatchet, man, you're way out of line

Also, if you joined us for PSYCHOMANIA a couple of weeks back, you'll see a familiar face tonight.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some influence (I still need to watch this)

Understandable. Time is a construct

Worth it for the illustrations by @slipperyjack.bsky.social alone. The book is good too!

If you read the recent novelization (which is surprisingly good) by Robert Wynne-Simmons (the screenwriter) you'll get a better idea of what the anthology could have been, even if the novel itself ties things together much like the film. Different plotlines are fleshed out

Granted, I grew up in a house built in 1848, not the 1600s, but this actually makes sense to me. Lots of gaps for insulation and such.

Tigon also produced WITCHFINDER GENERAL, another pillar of the so-called Unholy Trinity of folk horror.

Yes! That's such a good observation

Tigon was among the British studios producing interesting horror at the time, along with Hammer and Amicus. In fact, Blood on Satan's Claw was originally meant to be an anthology film (like the output from Amicus), which explains the disjointed feel of its plotline.
