For once I'm early-ish to the party, having joined this app a while ago, but I'd never introduced myself before... feed looks a bit empty so time to redress that I guess.

CANMORE is going - much to the dismay of many - and here is a tribute to its incredible,
far-reaching contribution.

CANMORE is part of our heritage and it’s loss will have lingering effects.

I thought someone should write a brief tribute to Scotland's online archives Canmore and Scran (and their other superb counterparts) in their last days before the move to Trove - and it might as well be me. So here it is. www.jameshamilton.co.uk/uncategorize...

Pleased with my first artifact #photogrammetry model - a "c'önc' " or "füsèla" used to secure bundles of hay and the like ( threading a thin rope through the holes and twisting/wrapping it around the elongated bit). Done with Polycam as I am learning how to use it for community heritage purposes.

This is an important thread - I haven't used Trove yet but I use several of these functions on Canmore and, boy, I'll miss them!
So I think I need to do a sober thread on just how disasterously bad the new trove.scot website is, in comparison to the sites - especially Canmore - that it's replacing.

tl:dr - the new site is not fit for purpose; switching off the old sites on 24 June 2025 is way way way premature.

An interesting (and very worrying) thread for those of us who rely on Canmore for our research - I thought Trove was going to be just one more resource, rather than replacing Canmore ://

It was a pleasure to work on this one!
🐂 🪡 I commissioned @croisch.bsky.social to embroider a #Pictish Burghead Bull design on a cushion for my mum's birthday, asking Moira to create a hybrid of the Burghead 5 and 6 carved stones.

Understandably, my mum and I are delighted with the brilliant result!

THIS!
Just out of my first Long Covid group session, a little over 9 months after getting covid. Looking at the 50 wee screens of people from Glasgow all looking for a way to get better, I can’t help but think of @teamlabouruk.bsky.social and their choice to demonise people left sick, instead of helping.

Look, it's one of my favourite swords of all times, mostly because a dear friend noted, during a uni study sesh, that handle and pommel kinda look like a mushroom. No words were added to my essay that day, but I do have a wee colourful sketch of a mushroom-hilted sword somewhere still.
For context, it's one of the swords on display at Oslo Gardermoen airport, on loan from the Historical Museum.

Apparently Sunday was Covid day of reflection in the UK, and I would love if those who reposted stuff on the mental health impact of lockdowns would spare a thought for all the chronically ill, immunosuppressed, or otherwise vulnerable people for whom these impacts are very much still not over.

It's been a very hectic February, so here's a belated post from SSASC 2025 in Edinburgh, chatting all things gannets, Guga and Gaelic to my fellow student attendees.
My poster also got a prize which was a nice surprise considering how early stages my research project it.
