On a less immediate level, it's one of the reasons I think with my politics it is important to actually use the word anarchist. I say this all the time, but it's the idea they hate. You give ground on anarchist, you give ground on socialist, eventually you can't speak at all. Which is the point. /1
I don’t use these phrases myself, as you’ll have noticed. But I am here to tell you that if we could impose an effective blanket ban on use of any particular phrases and symbols, then this bullshit would instantly shift to different phrases and symbols at exactly the same intensity.

Popped over to the tremendous @owenexiehurcum.bsky.social’s session for their presentation which is whip-smart, well argued and fun. 🤩

Iwaisi asks, how to curate our way out of genocide? @tag2025york.bsky.social 🏺

Iwaisi cites Sontag’s Regarding the Pain of others in normalising Gaza as a ruinscape in museums and media.

“The living person disappears between the archaeological past and the catastrophic present.”

Perhaps also a cautionary tale that craniometric methods not only risk perpetuating racial thinking, but are also unreliable in terms of inferring ancestry. I think also there is point about resisting hanging potent narratives of the past on single individuals where there is ample uncertainty....

Now Mazen Iwaisi, “Gaza in the Museum: subject, materiality & memory,” mentions this exhibition “This is not an Exhibition” palmuseum.org/en/exhibitio...

We now have Brian Boyd, "A 'Prehistory' for Gaza?", apologising for the manel--there's many logistical issues with organising around this topic. @tag2025york.bsky.social. He discusses the "exodus" narrative and how it has fuelled Zionist framing of cultural heritage in the region. 🏺

Moerike Tobias is now tracing the history of archaeology in Gaza to analyse its positioning and reproduction as a crossroads. @tag2025york.bsky.social 🏺#tag2025

Incredibly moving opening to “Decolonizing Gaza’s ’Crossroads Theory’: Reflections on
Imagination of Violent Crossroads and a Victim City” by Mazen Iwaisi, asking us to maintain rigour & academic engagement while recognising the horror and persistence of a girl in Gaza, picking books out of rubble.
