It’s the time of year for mentioning one of my favourite ‘untranslatables’.
‘Poronkusema’, in Finnish, once denoted a distance of around 7.5km, which is roughly how long a reindeer can last before needing to urinate. ‘Poronkusema’ means ‘reindeer pee’.

It would be so easy to lash out in anger and return that hate back. Instead, I'm seeking support from safe people. I'm looking after myself. I'm reminding myself abelism and hate do not change reality. I am proud of my neurodivergent family. #actuallyautistic

Did you know New Zealand and other south-west Pacific islands have LEAF-VEINED SLUGS?!
Unlike their omnivorous European relatives, these unique leaf-mimicking slugs eat only fungi. They breathe mainly through the skin of the back, which is kept moist by secretions passing along the many grooves! 🧪

Don't be tempted to clear dead vegetation & seed heads before winter. They offer shelter for invertebrates, & many seeds provide natural food for birds. In our garden, goldfinches feast on verbena, knapweed, lavender, even lettuce seed heads. What do the birds go for near you? #UKbirding #gardening
