A message to all our communities from @mancitycouncil.bsky.social following yesterday’s horrific attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue.

Cracking speech in support of the motion from my fab ward colleague Councillor Angela Gartside. Lists the many amazing community groups and events in Withington Ward, which we have long supported and will continue to support. 👏🏻 ❤️

Emergency motion welcoming the £80m to be received by some of our most deprived communities, thanks to the Labour government’s Pride in Place programme. Motion and speakers emphasise the importance of local communities getting to decide how the money is spent, via neighbourhood boards.

I’m embarrassed for the county I grew up in. Now run by racist, conspiracist cranks.

There are a number of protests in Manchester this weekend including a visit from the far right group Britain First. Please see the message to our communities from Manchester City Council below - “Manchester does not tolerate racism, bigotry or division”.

By way of complete contrast, the final motion sees Cllr Jon-Connor Lyons calling for the Northern Quarter to get its Big Horn back. Motion carried, which should stiffen the resolve to finish off this hard task.
July 16, 2025 at 12:11 PM
That motion was carried. Now @jomidge.bsky.social and Cllr Shazia Butt moving an amendment to a motion tackling anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian racism, committing the Council to forming a working group that will set out practical steps. Motion amended and carried.

Opposition motion calling for more affordable and social housing. @gavinwhite76.bsky.social and Cllr Irene Robinson pointing out we’re doing that already - and pointing out hypocrisy of Lib Dems and Greens who demand more housing in the chamber, then oppose it in local campaigns and at Planning.
July 16, 2025 at 10:17 AM
This was followed by a motion moved by @cllrsuzanne.bsky.social calling for the Council to work with GMP to tackle this issue, raise awareness, support the campaign, and call for tougher regulation from government.

Motion passed unanimously.

At Full Council today, we heard from Carly and Farah about @jacobsjourney.bsky.social. It’s a campaign for tougher action on off-road bikes and e-scooters, started after Carly’s son Jacob died when his friend’s e-scooter collided with a car.

On 18 July, I’m hiking 10km up a hill and then rowing 6km across Lake Windermere to help raise money for @welovemcr.bsky.social. They’re an amazing charity who support people and communities across Manchester. 🚶‍♂️ ⛰️ 🚣‍♀️

😢 TV-AM was Wincey’s breakout gig, but for me it’s all about Treasure Hunt. Her chemistry with Anneka and Kenneth made the show special.

Also very sad that her death has only now come to light, six months on. RIP

There’s been a lot of great stuff from Labour this week: massive public transport investment, banning bonuses for water bosses, and best of all tackling child poverty with a huge expansion of free school meals. That’s the difference a Labour government makes.

Looking at results, although UK placed 19th v 18th last year, we accrued nearly twice as many points. Meanwhile Austria had the lowest winner total since the current scoring system was introduced (Top 4 last year all scored more). Voting was the most scattered it’s been since 2011.

🇦🇹 Song 9. Raising a glass to Terry Wogan. And to Benji. He loved Eurovision possibly even more than me. ❤️

Second @eurovision.tv semi-final incoming. Again, my predicted qualifiers based on watching preview clips a few weeks ago:

🇦🇺 🇮🇪 🇦🇹 🇬🇷 🇲🇹 🇩🇰 🇨🇿 🇱🇺 🇮🇱 🇫🇮

But there’s bound to be a San Marino-shaped curveball tonight, and potentially also a Belgium-style underperformer.

This morning at Full Council, Cllr Paul Andrews handed over the Lord Mayoralty of Manchester to Cllr Carmine Grimshaw. Paul has been a fantastic Lord Mayor, and Carmine (with Cllr Shaukat Ali as his Deputy), will be amazing too. ❤️

Politicians who attack and smear LGBTQ+ charities should not be in the Labour Party.
