But I'm having a break. And by a break I mean I'm back on Holy Terra. Book 10 of the Horus Heresy is a go! I'm 6% in and already praising Dan

But I'm having a break! And by a break I mean I'm back on Holy Terra! Book 10 of the Horus Heresy - Tales of Heresy!

And you know what? Only 6% in and I'm ready to praise this. The goat story is absolute fire.

So yea... Vexations has got better. So that's good!

Time for more chai and reading.

Better try and shore up some of the mistakes we made earlier", but it's helped. Some of it is still... Eh... I hope I never hear of the Curryd Empire again... Mildly amusing? Sure. Very cringe? Also yes.

Anyways. I was wrong. I also have vol 9 apparently? It was laid on top of the rest of them.

Spoiler time!

This volume sees us finally exploring the Netherworld! And... Honestly it feels a bit like we're finally addressing some of the shoddy world building of the first 7 volumes.

I'm not going to lie... Some of it definitely has a vibe of "Ha this has gone on longer than expected...

Push on much further. Look I'll be honest - I was a little harsh in my last post. Clearly I'm enjoying myself enough to continue at this point - though yes some of it is just sunk cost.

At least I'll definitely be having a bit of a rest after this. Probably back to The Horus Heresy after...

Not going to lie... The urge to put this book down is STRONG at this point. Probably only going to keep going because I hate doing that and I already own vol 8.

Got here has felt very forced. With some absolutely ridiculous plot devices and happenstances to get us here.

Oh and a sob story is starting to be told about an antagonist that just got defeated again. Make us care before they're monsters. Otherwise... You're wasting mine and your time.
November 17, 2025 at 9:31 AM
Put into a situation that may or may not be worse and... also has some really distasteful overtones. And yet more powerful MacGuffins have come out of the woodwork to result in antagonists that now shouldn't be able to lose except through gross incompetence.

And if that wasn't enough just how we...
November 17, 2025 at 9:31 AM
And generally... Lacking direction? Well this volume is trying to fix that a bit in a very very hamfisted way. Suddenly bad guys are spouting a whole load of gibberish words in their exposition, a semi main cast member is being summarily executed for almost no reason, and another is being...

My opinion. But then considering Komari and Vill's growth in previous volumes to being more comfortable and closer... This honestly felt like it took a big ol' shit on that, and put it back a few steps even.

I think I might have complained previously that Vexations is a little too light hearted...
November 17, 2025 at 9:31 AM
So the book opens up with the plotline established at the end of the last volume - Lingzi and Meihua after Komari's help for the Enchanted Lands.

Using the rather distasteful trope of "We used a power on you to make you fall in love with Lingzi lol".

That... It's a bit cringe to begin with in...

As usual stop here if you don't want spoilers.

Anyways summary!

Great book. Absolutely recommend giving it a read. It might not be key to the central Heresy, but it explains the fall of Mars and gives some context.

On top of that, it's just a good story in it's own right against the backdrop of the Imperium of Man starting to burn

It, it's totally possible Graham was working with established lore for this anyways.

Little vexed about the Addenda. No idea when that little mystery is going to be solved but with how invested I was in Dalia, I feel kinda robbed of the closure it felt like we had for her from that.
November 2, 2025 at 6:23 PM
Rather than "You wanna know how I got these scarssss" it still (when I admittedly just thought about it more than I should have) struck me as a missed chance to emphasize humanity can be found in those who don't look like greek gods (exaggeration I know).

Of course as much as I'm moaning about...
November 2, 2025 at 6:23 PM
To be clear - it's the whole "This guy is a good guy so he's a handsome human, this guy is evil so he's all scarred and inhuman looking" trope. Honestly felt unnecessary to me?

And as much as it's abstracted from the original trope a bit by the EXTREME of modification the likes of Kelbor-Hal had...
November 2, 2025 at 6:23 PM
I dunno. Anyway - point is - the antagonists felt well written.

Though considering Fabricator Locum Kane's later modifications (I think I've heard even before the HH is over he's practically a tank rather than a humanoid?) I find his almost human appearance here... A bit eh.

Probably makes some thematic sense considering some of his imagery (brass towers) and the fact so much of the Mechanicum's technology is for the waging of war and the spilling of blood.

Wonder if Grandpa had a hand in the development of the scrapecode? Though maybe that's more Tzeentch?
November 2, 2025 at 6:23 PM
Our antagonists didn't feel as cartoonishly evil this time round either - even if towards the end it was feeling a little that way.

Loved the implication the Kaban Machine was a Khornite warrior by the end. And honestly I guess big K probably spearheading the corruption of the Mechanicum...

Firstly, not JUST a female lead, but multiple ladies in leading positions! I get WHY Astartes-centric volumes are such a testosterone soaked sausage fest... But not going to lie, it gets tiring.

Dalia is a great lead and someone I felt I could actually like and empathise with. And Adept Zeth too!
