Alright.

The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess vol 8 complete. I went into this book with a feeling of "Let's just try and get this done". How did I end it?

Honestly? Better.

This was the best volume out of the last 2-3 easily. The plot has moved forward and certain things have happened.

Alright. Volume 7 of The Vexations of a Shut In Vampire Princess complete. Some of what I moaned about has been resolved. Plenty hasn't or it was just unresolvable.

I've made the decision to plough on with volume 8. That will bring me up to date I believe.

I'm honestly hoping this doesn't...

Ok so... I don't usually do this but I'm about half way through The Vexations of a Shut In Vampire Princess vol 7 at this point and... Eh I'm struggling.

Look. I'd never accuse Vexations of being Shakespeare. But honestly I'm struggling to like the direction of the story in this volume at all.

And on that high note I've decided it's time to pop back to The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess by Kotei Kobayashi again for a bit. Vol 7!

Not sure how long I'll stay away from the HH... Probably not too long. Everything else I fancy reading is a bit too much of an investment at the moment.

And that's Mechanicum by Graham McNeill completed.

Hmmmm. Gotta say... Probably one of my favourites so far of the Horus Heresy for multiple reasons. I might not have read it fast, but I think I honestly enjoyed all of it.

Stop reading here if you don't want spoilers!

Horus Heresy book 8 - Battle for the Abyss by Ben Counter finished. And I'm going to be honest... After my hopeful post when I was starting I was left... Disappointed.

The fact I finished it proves it wasn't terrible. But I've got quite a few issues with it honestly.
October 19, 2025 at 3:45 PM
Well... I finished Legion.

That's a heavy ending. To be expected I guess all considering but still...

Did I enjoy Legion? Yes I think it's fair to say I did. And I would also say once I got used to the taste of the spy shenanigans it agreed with me more than I thought it was going to.

Another random WH40K: HH Book 7 - Legion musing - I'm not sure if I'm meant to like Namatjir? But so far for all his vaunted intellect and tactical genius he just seems like a stuck up fop.

Literally peacocking with a train of peacock feathers? Gold plate with gold foil mask? So tacky...

I should check in. Descent of Angels complete! Not a bad book, but I can see why people invested in the Heresy would be all "Meh, this is not what I want to read".

I've dived straight into book 7, "Legion" of the Horus Heresy now. I'm not going to lie... Not a fan of it so far. Again, not a BAD...

Another non-book post. Went to the London Palladium this evening to see Penn and Teller - 50 Years of Magic.

Firstly - absolutely great show. Never doubted it would be. My first live show of theirs I've been to.

However - if you go don't expect it to be a string of constant actual tricks.

Seeing as I'm here for other reasons I should update!

Vexations book 6 finished. It was... Fun? But I get the feeling the author is struggling? Like... It feels like they never expected it to take off and were making a joke series and now they're trying to make it something more?
September 11, 2025 at 3:54 PM
I WAS going to read The Executioner and Her Way of Life Vol. 9 next. I picked it up, lovingly gazed at the artwork inside, turned to the prologue... And got a strange feeling that something was wrong.

I read it. Then started chapter 1. I had read it before. I was SURE. I flipped ahead and every...

And that's volume 21 of That Time I Was Reincarnated as a Slime completed by Fuse. So non-spoiler talk... That was an improvement over last book. Bit less "ZOMG EP OVER 9000!". First half I really rather enjoyed. Second half... Eh. Was a bit of a chore honestly. Let's dive into the spoilers...
August 25, 2025 at 8:02 PM
And that's The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess 5 complete. A nice palate cleanser after Fulgrim.

I'm not going to lie I picked this up with doubt. This series isn't BAD... But it can be too silly at times for my tastes. But I actually started grinning when the silly started up this time...

My journey in WH40K's Horus Heresy has continued, and I have now finished book 5, Fulgrim by Graham McNeill. Firstly non-spoiler comments, spoilery stuff will be in replies here.

Overall it was a great book. The pacing felt pretty good, and like the last, a good third or more was basically a recap.

Flight of the Eisenstein by James Swallow complete. What a book. That was a good one indeed.

I felt the start was maybe a little slow, but it was probably more just getting used to the tone and pace of Garro. Who is definitely a likable protagonist.

Onwards to Fulgrim!

Side note: I keep picturing Primarch Angron's face as Rupert Grint by accident because I idly wondered...

"Did they give all the Primarch's placeholder names before deciding on their personalities? Did they go... Well this one is called Ron and he's going to be Angry... So... Angry Ron... Angron?"
July 27, 2025 at 4:49 PM
Well. It took a while. Noe I'm currently up to date with Abilities Average. Thanks FUNA. A fun read. I await volume 20 to be delivered!

Now I plunge back into the grim dark of the far future and join Nathaniel Garro's side of the story in "Flight of the Eisenstein" by James Swallow.
July 27, 2025 at 4:46 PM
I'm still chugging along with FUNA's Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life - and just finished volume 13. It's still fun. Still not serious really, and pretty damn low stakes.

But those are kinda the things that make it good? It's a nice break from all the "OMG the...

So I caved. I planned to save this for a Holiday or something. But I started this Friday evening, and it was finished by Sunday afternoon. Miya Kazuki's knocked it out of the park again. Ascendance of a Bookworm: Hannelore's Fifth Year at the Royal Academy vol 1 might come across as a side story...
June 17, 2025 at 8:03 AM
Huh I've been neglectful. After Death or Glory I started the fun romp that is "Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life!?" by FUNA. I've just read solidly from book 1 to 8.

It's fun. No Shakespeare. And very low stakes mostly. It's almost a slice of life isekai where the...

Back to WH40K, the 41st millennium for a bit with the hero of the Imperium! I don't have the next book of the Horus Heresy to hand and feel like something just a little lighter still so we have Death or Glory with Ciaphas Cain!
May 3, 2025 at 12:28 PM
And now I've finished Empress vol 3. That ending was... Rough. Blimey... There's going to be blood.

But yep. Enjoyed that. The way J. V. Simms mocks a thing then blatantly uses it anyway amuses me.

Not sure what's next. I'll decide that on the morrow. (The morrow is my bird)
May 2, 2025 at 1:26 AM
So I finished Galaxy in Flames a while ago. It was great but... Well. I decided I needed something lighter after that. Enter "Empress: By The Sword" book 2!

J V Simms strikes again with the lovely (but totally psychotic) Everly. I've just finished this one too, and it's once again a completely...
April 21, 2025 at 8:44 PM
Time to get into the first real events of the heresy! Galaxy in Flames by Ben Counter.

Slime volume 20 though... Not going to lie, the last 2/3rd's weren't... Amazing. We saw action with more characters we actually care about. But at the same time *spoilers incoming*...
