It freaks me out when colleagues ignore my recovery time.

Work-related WhatsApp messages after hours, on weekends, or Christmas aren't rare.

It's not only annoying. A lack of recovery leads to long-term health consequences.

Randomized controlled trials (the gold standard for measuring treatment effectiveness) showed that the ketogenic diet improves:

- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Alzheimer’s/cognitive impairment

…and there’s favorable evidence for other conditions, too.

7/ @ChrisPalmerMD & colleagues just reviewed the evidence on the ketogenic diet as a treatment for mental health conditions.

It’s a diet with low carbohydrate & moderate to high fat intake. Its calming effects on the brains of epilepsy patients have been known for 100+ years.

The result? Perceived stress levels significantly dropped in group 1 after only 4 weeks. Group 2 showed no such effect.

This study highlights the importance of gut health in mental health.

- Group 1: modified Mediterranean diet (with lots of fresh, unprocessed or minimally processed foods & olive oil).
- Group 2: social support sessions only.

The result? Group 1 saw greater improvements than group 2.

It demonstrates the impact of nutrition on mental health.
