As of November, 2024, 40 states have adopted “science of reading” legislation designed to raise student reading performance. However, 2024 4th grade NAEP reading scores went down compared to previous years. Maybe it’s time to rethink the wisdom of mandating SoR curricula as “transformative”

CLAVES can be used on its own or as a curricular supplement. It was designed with and for multilingual students and their teachers.

Core Knowledge Language Arts is a “science of reading” curriculum whose lead editor is E.D. Hirsch. If your district adopts this curriculum while simultaneously talking about “culturally sustaining pedagogy”, please ask whose culture is being sustained in the name of the “science of reading”.
