My photo collage shows five cylindrical Minoan cups each with a single handle and slightly flaring rim. Each cup is decorated with a different geometric polychrome motif: Top left: swirling white vine-like lines and round reddish-orange medallions framed by white circles on a black background. Top right : large white spiral on front of cup with a reddish-orange oval shape with stylised white petals beside it, on a black background. Middle left: diagonal zig-zag stripes in alternating black and white above and below a band around the middle of the cup Bottom left: swirling white lines and reddish-orange and white geometric band on a black background. Bottom right: diagonal white stripes below a row of red dots outlined with white circles on a black background. This type of ornamental Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware, named after the Kamares Cave on Mount Ida on the Greek island of Crete where this kind of pottery was first discovered. Kamares Ware vessels were luxury items produced by palace workshops at Phaistos and Knossos on Crete. These five cups were excavated at Phaistos and are dated 1800-1700 BC.

Beginner knitting question I can't find an answer to:

If a pattern calls for 430 yards of yarn but I only have 420, will I actually run out? How accurate are these yarn estimates??

What if I used a smaller needle size? It's a scarf. My yarn is superwash which supposedly stretches a lot.

🔭 Comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN)

A new visitor from the outer Solar System, comet C/2025 R2 (SWAN) also known as SWAN25B was only discovered late last week, on September 11. That's just day before the comet reached perihelion, its closest approach to the Sun. First spotted by Vladimir Bezugly in images from the SWAN instrument on the sun-staring SOHO spacecraft, the comet was surprisingly bright but understandably difficult to see against the Sun's glare. Still close to the Sun on the sky, the greenish coma and tail of C/2025 R2 (SWAN) are captured in this telescopic snapshot from September 17. Spica, alpha star of the constellation Virgo, shines just beyond the upper left edge of the frame while the comet is about 6.5 light-minutes from planet Earth. Near the western horizon after sunset and slightly easier to see in binoculars from the southern hemisphere, this comet SWAN will pass near Zubenelgenubi, alpha star of Libra, on October 2. C/2025 R2 (SWAN) is scheduled to make its closest approach to our fair planet around October 20.

A colossal head rises in a vast crimson desert. Half of it is unraveling, revealing a setting sun conspicuously not covered by the massive shelf cloud surrounding it. One eye is glowing, but you're not sure if you're looking through the head to the sky beyond or if it is lambent on its own. There is peace in this nothingness, albeit fleeting. It doesn't matter where you go, you can't outrun yourself.

Making progress with Linux, ever so slowly!

Got another drive for storage for my birthday 🥰 Now I've installed all 4 drives in the case, rearranged the SATA cables, and read about boot/mounting settings. Today I'm gonna edit the fstab, pray for meeee lol 😭

OK... I changed to Q4os with the Trinity desktop because a) it's cute as fuck omg and b) it's Debian based, and I believe Debian is still using the ntfs-3g driver by default. ✨️ I don't want to use NTFS indefinitely so I'll get a new HDD for Linux use only, formatted in ext4, so I can stop worrying 😤

🔭 Titan Shadow Transit

Every 15 years or so, Saturn's rings are tilted edge-on to our line of sight. As the bright, beautiful ring system grows narrower and fainter it becomes increasingly difficult to see for denizens of planet Earth. But it does provide the opportunity to watch transits of Saturn's moons and their dark shadows across the ringed gas giant's still bright disk. Of course Saturn's largest moon Titan is the easiest to spot in transit. In this telescopic snapshot from July 18, Titan itself is at the upper left, casting a round dark shadow on Saturn's banded cloudtops above the narrow rings. In fact Titan's transit season is in full swing now with shadow transits every 16 days corresponding to the moon's orbital period. Its final shadow transit will be on October 6, though Titan's pale disk will continue to cross in front of Saturn as seen from telescopes on planet Earth every 16 days through January 25, 2026.

🔭 ISS Meets Saturn

This month, bright planet Saturn rises in evening skies, its rings oriented nearly edge-on when viewed from planet Earth. And in the early morning hours on July 6, it posed very briefly with the International Space Station when viewed from a location in Federal Way, Washington, USA. This well-planned image, a stack of video frames, captures their momentary conjunction in the same telescopic field of view. With the ISS in low Earth orbit, space station and gas giant planet were separated by almost 1.4 billion kilometers. Their apparent sizes are comparable but the ISS was much brighter than Saturn and the ringed planet's brightness has been increased for visibility in the stacked image. Precise timing and an exact location were needed to capture the ISS/Saturn conjunction.
