Wild that it’s just now sinking in who actually pays for the tariffs

(Hint: Small business owners, American consumers, etc.)

Who knew technocrat central banker Mark Carney was going to turn out so imaginative and bold (in a good way) as a politician? His book on Value is pretty good.

The new tariffs are estimated to decrease US GDP in the long run while slightly boosting European and Mexican prosperity. The only country that’ll suffer more is Canada. How does that make sense?

One of the more galling aspects of the Liberation Day nonsense is that they couldn’t even find it within themselves to delay the 45% tariffs on Myanmar, which is currently dealing with an earthquake that killed more than 3,000 people and displaced countless more on Friday.

The Senate just passed a resolution — 51-48 — to eliminate Trump admin tariffs on Canadian imports.

Four Republicans joined all Democrats in supporting the resolution: Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul.

We need more … {checks notes} … Mitch McConnells?
Sen. Mitch McConnell privately indicated to Sen. Tim Kaine he would back the Virginia Democrat’s resolution to undo Trump’s Canada tariffs.

Kaine told reporters today that the former GOP leader told him he would back Kaine’s resolution, which will get a vote on the Senate floor Wednesday evening.
McConnell breaks with party to reject Trump's Canada tariffs
The former Senate Republican leader will likely deliver the deciding vote on a resolution to block a national emergency used to justify the new tariffs on Canadian imports.

Also notable that:
- Trump refers to “both the United States of America and Canada,” a shift in tone from the 51st state talk
- Calls him prime minister instead of governor
- Also seems to be just straight up assuming Carney will win the election, talks about meeting him afterward

Auto parts cross the Canada-U.S. border six times on average before final assembly. In a trade crisis, that’s a vulnerability.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH
