Although morally repugnant, many see this as a calculated political ploy before a suspect was named to soften the blow on the assumption the killer was a Trump MAGAt. In that sense, it's even worse than face value since it presupposes MAGAts will kill for Trump - nothing personal; just business.
I kind of miss the days when America would at least pretend to be civilised in public.
