But then I read the review & after 6 well written paragraphs outlining all the ways the game is an excruciating nightmare of an experience, the 7th and final paragraph includes the line "This might very well end up being my favorite horror game I've ever seen conceived"

I've only played the 3DS version of DQVIII and I feel like I biffed it. The PS2 version is gorgeous

Btw I thought the concept of a theatre that unfolds to launch a whale-shaped airship that transports a team of stage performers who fight evil with colour-coded robots is exactly the kind of idea Gerry Anderson (of Thunderbirds etc) would've come up with
