I work in mental health and am very keenly aware that sometimes people will do this even when resources are available, and not every tragedy can be prevented. But AI is way too big for its britches, and this is a price way too high for me to think we should see it through anyway. We don't need it.

Which we can count on them to do. The responsible thing would be to put this thing back in the can until they are sure it won't actively assist someone in completing suicide, an option you don't mention at all. So what am I to take from that? That you don't think that's reasonable or viable.

If you don't want to engage because I'm being snarky here fair enough. But you don't grapple in this article at all with whether or not this tech should even be available, given these circumstances, which seems the more obvious question to me. Of course the corps chose an awful, inhuman response...

It seems like your argument is based around the idea that we must have this tech available, and no one can be held liable for the results, regardless of how disastrous. Death is just a price to pay for being told to eat three rocks a day, but hey, at least it can write shitty email replies for me.

Which is why this tech shouldn't exist. It can't be effectively guardrailed, and one of it's most basic tenets--"to be helpful"-- results in all kinds of problematic misinfo and responses. The prime selling this tech are talking about it like it can replace your therapist, your friends, family, etc.
